Sometimes The Question Is Better Than The Answer

SOMETIMES THE QUESTION IS BETTER THAN THE ANSWER

Dedicated to a friend now long gone

Sometimes I believe...

Without the slightest of doubt,

That you’re still looking down on us,

With an open heart.

You're brandishing that goofy smile,

From way up in the clouds.

You're happily watching down on us,

Living the rest of your life through ours.

Sometimes I feel...

The last hug we exchanged.

Along with the tingling in my ear,

That appears whenever hearing your voice.

It was never without that smile,

The goofy one that could be mistaken for a smirk.

Like you were always up to something,

Always off in your own little world,

Always encouraging the rest of us to join.

Sometimes I wish...

To know what was going through your mind,

Were we really all so blind?

That there was something,

One of us could have said.

Maybe I could have shown you,

The impact you never knew you had.

All I ask for is one more random night,

One more cigarette,

One more chance to do it right.

Sometimes I know...

You gaze upon the endless seconds of time,

Curiously watching a world,

You tried your best to comprehend.

Envisioning an army of soldiers engaged in a losing war,

Courageously marching backward into the past.

With conviction they march,

Openly accepting their well-known fate.

Their mission is carried out without question,

But the real mystery is what is left behind.

The evaporating thought of a once vivid memory,

That now only exists in the form of a faint whisper.

Making everyone wonder why the past,

Can’t help but fade away.

Still I know that all the while,

Infinitely above our heads,

You are reflecting on your own memories.

Remembering what you voluntarily gave up,

Gratefully realizing what can never be lost,

What can never be taken away.

Almost as if stuck in the moment,

Like time had ceased to continue forward.

Regardless there are moments,

That can bring tears to my eyes.

Every time I look up into the heavens,

And pose a single question.

"Do you still remember me?"
