[Mal's at the pawn shop today; the feed is not accidental, for once. He's all business right now.] Got a handful of new people poppin' in. Name's Mal Reynolds; I run what amounts to a police force here, staffed by us miscreant transplants. You got a problem or want in on it, you let me know. Guard HQ's mid-Market and Crowley's Pawn Shop's on one ( Read more... )

My name is Hadrian. It's nice to meet you, Mr. Reynolds. [He a brief pause, but he tone never changes from that of a business transaction.] I'd like more information on the police force you mentioned if you have the time.

[And even as he's talking, his gaze is focused on the strange item the display is turned to show.] I could take a look at that for you.

[He glances at the... thing on the counter.] Yeah, have at it.

[And so Hadrian makes his way down to the location specified. It isn't difficult to find. It just so happens, he finds Mal at the pawn shop rather than the HQ.]

Captain Reynolds?

[Mal looks up from where he's poking at the thing he found.] Hadrian. Come on in.

[He nods and steps in to the shop.] You're the captain of the police force, correct?

Yeah, that's me, for better or worse. You got questions?

I don't know you well enough to pass any judgement on better or worse, Captain. [And believe it or not, that was Spartan's attempt at a joke.] Yes, I have several. You described it as a police force. I assume all incidents are reported to you?

[Blink, blink. If that's a joke, it's lost on Mal.] Supposed to be. We're pretty informal and sometimes things don't come to us first.

[He chalks that up to a failure at humor, but nods.] How are you organized?

Me and one other person in the office most times, though we take shifts to. We have pairs taking six hour shifts 'round the clock.

[He tilts his head to the side.] Given the square mileage of the island, a single party of two would have little chance of witnessing anything in six hours that would be of any use. There's too much ground to cover. I would suggest dividing the island up into quadrants, each manned by a two-man group and rotate the shifts every four hours, that is, of course, assuming the only option for monitoring the island were regular guard rotations. Has no one set up perimeter alarms?

We don't got 'nough volunteers to cover that many shifts. Hell of a good idea, but nothin' doin' just yet. I don't know of any perimeter alarms; someone's got 'em set up, I don't know 'bout it.
