[He doesn't even ask how she knows his brother. Dean always makes a point to meet the good-looking women.]
[The rest of it finally makes Sam pick up his tablet, looking weary and upset, but that's somewhat understandable, given the memory.]
I'll try to remember not to cuss about her if you're around. I know it's not the same goddess that you worship, most likely, but that's no excuse for me to be rude.
I don't mind if you cuss about her, I'm not a huge fan of the Hecate here. The whole imprisonment and torture thing isn't exactly fun and thrilling. I'd hardly consider it rude.
[No wonder she gets along with Dean. There are days it works for Sam, too. Today, a little. That's enough.]
I'm in the family business as much as Dean is. We're Hunters. We go after the things that go bump in the night, that people don't know about because the modern world doesn't believe in that superstitious stuff anymore.
It means we've killed a lot of creatures, exorcised a lot of demons. In other words, we've pissed off a LOT of things in our world.
The modern world doesn't believe in a lot of things, it's probably better that way. If they knew all of what was out there, there'd be a lot more people in danger.
[She raises an eyebrow] How exactly does someone get the job of being a Hunter?
Given the stuff we deal with, definitely better that way. For the most part. It makes them easier targets, but it's still a certain level of protection to it.
[Sam frowns, considering that for a few moments. Mostly in what to say.]
Honestly? It tends to come out of a revenge kick. You lose somebody you love to the creatures, to the point where you can't ignore that these things happen. You start learning how to take out the thing that broke up your family, but by then you start realizing just how much else is out there that people know nothing about. Maybe you start meeting other Hunters, maybe you just pay more attention to the news. But they're out there and somebody has to protect people.

[Sam goes quiet for a moment, then sighs and rubs his face.]
Close, but not exactly. Our mother was killed by a demon when I was six months old. Dean was four. Dad saw the creature that did it, a demon with yellow eyes. This, by the way, is pretty unusual in our world. Most demons have black eyes.
The house burned down. Dad started learning all that he could to hunt the creature, then all the other things that feed on regular people. He started teaching Dean and...taught me when it became obvious that I'd learned what happened, why we moved around so much. I tried to get out, but the same demon killed my girlfriend. I've been back hunting ever since.
Sorry to hear about your mom and your girlfriend. That must have been hard to lose someone twice to the same thing. [She pauses, trying to decide if she should ask anymore or not.] Did you at least get to kill it eventually?
Hecate...they really picked a bad one for you.

Yeah. Yeah, it really was.
I don't think I've ever heard anybody swear by one of the gods down here.
[Swear AT, certainly. Sam's done that himself. Swear by? That was new.]

[Awkward. He's the first person to question that.] Eh, it's not by her exactly. Hecate's the goddess my people worship.

[Okay, even Sam knows that that's a really bad evasion. He sighs, rubbing his eyes.]
It's a really long story. The blonde was a really powerful demon called Lilith. And what happened to Dean was...Hellhounds.

Yeah. I think you could say that we were really good at pissing them off.

Dean did strike me as the type that might just have a talent for pissing things off. You seem awfully polite for something like that though.

That's generally how you get to be a Hunter.

I get ending up in something like that because of a need for revenge. [A beat] Sounds like that's how it happened for you.
