[The video turns on abruptly, jostled as Leppard jumps onto the table and lands almost directly on it. There's a muttered "oh" and the metallic clattering of a fork dropping. As his cat moves away from the feed, the viewer is afforded a view of the table

[Anna lands next to him with less a whoosh of displaced air than a gust of wind that sends any paper products in the vicinity flying, and drops a hand on his shoulder, scowling down at him ferociously.]
Cas, what the hell... [She hauls up, deliberately checks herself, and continues more gently,] ...sorry. You don't look well. What's going on?
[Dammit, why hasn't she checked on him sooner...Bobby's and Gabriel's disappearances both hit her hard, and she's still feeling them both, but that's no excuse. Clearly the Winchester boys can't be trusted with such a grave responsibility as to make sure their roommate fucking eats once in a while.]

I'm looking for food I like. [It's simple and it doesn't delve into what's wrong or who's left.]

[She surveys the other items on the table: a dish of plain rice, a meat concoction that on investigation turns out to be a fairly scalding curry, a handful of raw broccoli, cauliflower, green beans...] Hmm. Okay. Most of this stuff is a little on the complex side. How about we start you of with with something simple? Here... [She picks up a carrot and hands it to him.] Munch on that for a few minutes, I'll be right back.
[She goes into the kitchen and starts rummaging the cupboards. There's the strangest assortment of odds and ends in here, common foodstuffs mixed with exotic items she can't see the boys ever eating, things that need something else to accompany ( ... )

[To his credit, he does eat the carrot -- without dipping it in the rice, in point of fact. She doesn't take long, though he contemplates following her at one point when he hears her rummaging through the cabinets. She returns, though, before he can follow through.
He watches her put together the sandwich. (Again, perhaps notes should be taken.)] Peanut butter and jelly. [He thinks he's seen the guys put together one of those sandwiches once in awhile.] I've not had that.

Actually... [Looking at the ingredients,] mind if I have one too? [She hasn't had a PBJ in years, it looks really good, and making it would give her something to do so Cas doesn't feel like he's eating under surveillance.]

... The sandwich was good, though.]

You know, your body will tell you when it needs food, but it's not always as obvious as stomach pains. Anytime you feel tired or headachey or just generally not good for no obvious reason, you should stop and think how long it's been since you've eaten.

It seems as if it should be more distinctive.

Well, sometimes and for some people, it is. But there's all kinds of complicated chemical processes involved. It's not always the same even for the same person or at the sam time of day. Gimme a minute...
[She gets up, sandwich in hand, and retrieves a notepad and pen she spotted in the kitchen. Bringing them back, she neatly pens a few short, simple lists: Starches - bread, cereals, rice, potatoes; Protein - meat, fish, eggs, peanut butter; Fats... and so on.]
I'm sure it'll seem pretty complicated at first, but until you get a better handle on things, see if you can just eat a few items off each of these lists every day and you shouldn't go too far wrong. I'll pick you up some multivitamins too, those'll help head off some kinds of problems you could run into. [She frankly doesn't trust him not to come down with scurvy or somesuch while he's still learning--not that he's going to be left to his ( ... )

He puts his sandwich down in order to read the list she's making and there's a short moment in which he actually thinks that perhaps he should have let the wyrsa kill him. The dead didn't need to eat and then "life" would be simpler.
... So much simpler, judging by this list.]
Problems?

Deficiency diseases. Apart from just providing fuel and building materials, food is full of trace compounds you need to stay healthy. Without them you'll start having problems with your skin, hair, joints, all sorts of things. But getting enough of all of them just from what you eat can be tricky. [Between explaining, Anna's really enjoying her sandwich. How had she forgotten how much she likes them?] So, vitamin tablets. I used to take a couple every morning when I was human. It's no big deal, just a little insurance.

At least well enough, since he's not dead yet.]
I will take them, then.

It's good. [He'll be adding peanut butter to the short list of stuff he knows he likes.]
