I think--

[Pauses. Starts again.]

I'm going to... open a chantry. Just a small one, like a... like a chapel. I even found a suitable building, it just needs a little cleaning and fixing.

[Sighs.]It might be helpful to have a place to gather, that's all. You don't have to come by if you don't want to, and if you do come by, you don't have to pay ( Read more... )

[Van's sort of wary of priests after he realized one's intolerance was responsible for some of his misery back home. His voice sounds a touch cold, but he's still curious.]

What gods do you serve?

Just one, the Maker.

Monotheism? That is rare in my country.

Is your Maker a tolerant god? Does he accept all? [He might as well be asking 'are you a tolerant man, do you accept all?']

Really? Where are you from? What's it like there? [Honest questions.]

[He pauses. He's actually going to think this over.]

Most people believe the Maker's abandoned us long ago, and that only by proving our worth can we convince Him to return. But...

I think His work's still reflected in our own. [He might as well be saying 'he tries to be.']

[Van's barely out of school, prepare for some wall-of-text as he recites things learned from a textbook.]

I come from Valdemar. The man who established the country was a baron who escaped from a tyrannical empire, and in order to ensure that Valdemar wouldn't eventually succumb to the same problems as that empire, he petitioned every single God and Goddess of every pantheon to protect his future heirs from becoming corrupted.

And because of that our country has been known for tolerating all religions, but as I said before monotheistic ones are rare. The only one I've learned about are called the People of the One.

[He shakes his head.]

Why would people believe your god abandoned you?

Sounds like an ambitious plan, at the very least. [Actually kind of impressed.] I'm from a place called Thedas.

[Ready for some wall-of-text in return?]

He left us twice. First because men from the Tevinter Imperium used their blood magic to corrupt His Golden City and in the process, created the first darkspawn. He returned once again, at the behest of Andraste, his prophet, only to leave again when she was murdered by the same Imperium. I believe that qualifies as the short version?

[He looks away from the camera for a moment.] I suppose it was. It created a system that reached beyond his heirs, and it works well.

[He stiffens a bit at the mention of blood magic.]

I have seen blood magic, those who use it can hardly be called men. But what are darkspawn?

[Skipping the system discussion for now...]

You'll find no argument from me there.

Darkspawn are vicious creatures that were human long ago. But nothing of their humanity remains. They possess a taint, carried in their very blood, and they infect the people and land they come into contact with it. They no no remorse, no mercy, and if they simply kill a man that's a thankful thing indeed. Not only humans, but dwarves, elves, even qunari can find themselves turned into ghouls by the darkspawn.

[That's fine with him, he's more interested in learning about other worlds at the moment.]

Your god must be a vengeful one to release something like that on his own people. I can't blame them for feeling abandoned.

They're driven by their search for the Old Gods of the Imperium, buried deep underground, moreso than their offense in the eyes of the Maker. But, alas, I don't know much more about them. You'd be better off asking a Grey Warden like Carver than I.

Ah, well, thank you for taking the time to explain what you know.

My name is Vanyel, by the way. Maybe I will visit your chapel if you decide to open it. [At the very least you have much more pleasant voice than Father Leren...]
