[Castiel almost drops the tablet at the familiar voice. It hasn't been that long at all since Dean's been gone, but it's been long enough for Castiel to completely and thoroughly mope about his friend being gone.
And then he realizes that Dean has absolutely no clue where he is, which means Castiel is in for yet another conversation regarding what exactly is past and future.
... He hates those.
He casts out with arcane senses and snorts in frustration when he finds nothing; so this Dean is from after he engraved the sigils into his ribs. (Which, in this place, is more an annoyance than it is helpful.)]
[He just kind of stares at Cas for a moment and then he remembers that there are some...issues here that kind of need to be worked out. Dean sighs, running a hand over his hair.]
This is the Underworld. Pagan gods have pulled us here to fight in their war. [Pause and those who know him well enough can pick out the telltale subtle signs of disgust in his expression.] That is what they tell us, at any rate.
Yes, Dean. Pagan gods. Hades and Hecate. [He shares in that disgust, more than you can know right now.]
I'll assume you don't remember having been here before. [There's another pause then and Castiel dearly wants to have a few words with those pagan gods; what was the purpose of pulling Dean in over and over again?] Sam is safe; many of us have been pulled from our world at different points in time.
[For a moment, Castiel is silent; he's not entirely sure Dean needs to know this, but he also knows that Dean will never let it go.] You've been here twice before; the last time you were sent home, you returned here with no memory of the Underworld.
[In light of recent arrivals, he almost asks if Dean is dead, but manages to refrain. If Dean wasn't, the question would likely only serve to confuse him. If he was...
... Well, if he was, Castiel wouldn't take it well. That was something that could be figured out later.]
Yes, Dean. [When is he not serious?] Some were brought here after their deaths, some are living.
[As he listens to what Cas has to say, Dean starts to look frustrated and a little unnerved about the whole thing. So he's supposedly been here before? And Cas isn't acting like it's strange for him to be here at all.
He takes a breath and runs a hand over his face. This is all such crap.]
So you're saying this is normal? That I've... been to this Hell before and not remembering that is just part of the fucking deal?
[Wait. Did Cas say that some of the people he knew here had died? Something in his gut clenches and he feels a little nauseous at the thought that Sammy....
He swallows the feeling, turning his attention back to the angel.]
It's not... [He trails off, absolutely frustrated. He's so weary of these conversations and this is the third he's had with Dean.] It's not normal. [Except it is. Three times should be normal, right?]
[He sighs and then launches into answering Dean's question. That, he can at least do without stumbling. Hopefully.] Bobby, Jo, Sam, and Crowley are here and alive. Ellen and Anna are also here, but dead.
[Another pause and Castiel furrows his brow. Admittedly, this is a long-shot, but he feels as if he needs to ask. It isn't every day one is faced with a dead brother who not only is vague, but seems to be... avoiding him.] Do you know Balthazar?
[Dean looks a little skeptical at Cas' insistance that this sort of thing is apparently not normal. Three fucking times seems "normal" enough to him.
He listens, silent, as the angel rattles off the list of people that he knows or knew.]
Wait. How can people who are dead be here.
[Not that it wouldn't be kind of nice to see Ellen again (or Jo, for that matter) but it just seemed... really strange.
The hunter gives Cas a perplexed look when asks him if he knows Balthasomething. He has no clue who Cas is talking about, but assumes that the angel will elaborate if it's important.
[Castiel's response is quick and to the point (and with perhaps a shade of venom):] Ask Hades.
[All right, maybe a lot of venom. Castiel really doesn't like Hades.]
[And then Dean replies to his question with a complete non sequitur. Castiel tilts his head to the side, brow furrowed.] I am to assume that you do not know him, then? [He nods once, to himself, and drops the question. It had been a vain hope that Dean could tell him something.]
Regardless, both dead and living are here. We're told that we are pawns in their war.
[Dean is linefacing at you for that useless suggestion. It's obvious that Cas has some sort of beef with Hades, but the idea of asking him to explain things, well.... Let's just say that Dean doesn't have high hopes when it comes to negotiating with Pagan gods.]
Ask Hades? That's seriously all you've got for me here?
[He pauses, considering the angel's question.] Should I?
[He raises an eyebrow]
They gonna force us to fight each other or something?
[No, it's not all he's got, Dean, but Castiel is less than pleased with the situation.]
I'm not sure. Balthazar is an angel, brought here from sometime in the future. I had hoped you might be able to tell me when he is from. [There's a resigned note to his voice; Balthazar is being less than forthcoming and now that knowing Dean doesn't know... Well, that means he might actually have to try to corner Balthazar.]
That has happened. [Sort of; Castiel is hesitant when he says that. Considering he was one of the ones controlled and forced to attack others, it's not something he likes to talk about.] Hades seems to delight in putting us into untenable positions.
Sorry, Cas. Never heard of him before. He a friend or...? [He trails off. After all, it seemed like the majority of the angels that he'd met had all tried to kill him at one point or another.]
And then he realizes that Dean has absolutely no clue where he is, which means Castiel is in for yet another conversation regarding what exactly is past and future.

I'm not human.

...Cas?
[Yeah. There's not really much else to say. Congratulations. He's momentarily speechless.]

Yes.

Where the hell are we?
[And somewhat more importantly]
And where's Sammy?

Sam is here, Dean, and he's safe.

Pagan gods. Are you fucking serious? Haven't we seen enough of those bastards.
[It's kind of clear that he shares your disgust, Cas. Just a little.
A pause.]
You sure about that? 'Cause he sure as hell wasn't "safe" the last time I saw him.

Dean pauses, studying Cas as if he might be trying to pull his leg here.]
Remember? Shit. Is there something that I'm missing here?
[Okay. Cas thinks Sammy's safe. That's good, right? But he might be from a different time or some shit?]
Wait. Different points in time? Are you serious?
[Yeah. He already asked that question, but he still hopes this is some kind of sick joke]
