Guilt hung over Vanyel as he passed Starwind's slightly ajar door for the the fifth... sixth... seventh... hundredth time. He didn't have to peek into the room to know that there was another presence in there, but he was ignoring it. Vanyel should have been able to break through the shield, he was supposed to have power enough to do these things... but he didn't practice with his Gifts in this place. There were too many distractions, and well, he hadn't been spending as much time with Starwind since Tylendel arrived-- even after Moondance left, when he should have been there for him more.

What would Yfandes say if she saw all this, or Savil? Vanyel leaned against the wall and hung his head. They would both be disappointed in him. He was supposed to be a Herald, the Lord and Lady saw fit to save him over and over again because that was what he was meant for. Instead he was fumbling around, making do.

With his Mage-Gift he searched for the leylines that Starwind had tapped into, feeling the sudden rush of strength as he connected with them. It was the first time he's done this since the battle against the blood-mage back in his own world. They weren't as strong as the node, but it was enough to channel his frustration and anger. He weaved the power around him, a little clumsily, forming a levinbolt that smashed a nearby table. That is what he should have done to the demon-child, before Starwind even entered the room again and put the shield up...
