CHARACTER
Country Name [Human Name]: (the Dominion of) Canada/Matthew Williams
Apparent Age/Actual Age: 19/142 (Actual age is taken from time of Confederation)
Appearance: Canada's physical build is similar to that of America's except Canada is skinnier and a bit lanky. His hair is wavy, a lighter blond on the top and gradually becomes a darker shade of blond. He stands at around 5'9"-5'10", is bespectacled and has violet eyes (similar to one found in a sunset but a bit bluer). The outfit he can usually been seen in his red hoodie or a flannel shirt with jeans or slacks but he knows how to dress properly for meetings and get-togethers.
Personality: Matthew is a quiet person, a bit shy, a lot more toned down and less brash than his family. Most of the time he's ignored or mistaken for his brother, America, which doesn't give him much of a chance to act as himself. While most of the time he is quiet and goes along with what other people say, there is another side to Canada. This other side, when it comes out, is a complete and utter snark. Usually in an argument is when the snarky side comes out, which can be seen when Canada and America have an argument and Canada reduces the other to tears. He's a bit laid back even though he knows he needs to get work done.
Weapons:
Matthew has never been drawn with anything that can really be taken as a weapon so I'm going with what I see fit.
-Sniper Rifles (Canadians broke the world sniper distance record
-Hockey Sticks and/or Tomahawk (it's fanon that Matthew plays hockey and that he's aggressive when he does so. A tomahawk would be a bit similar to the hockey stick but just being a lot smaller and an axe)
Your Favorite place to hide: Under the bed.
History:
The earliest known European contact with Canada was made by the Norse, which began as early as the 10th century but these settlements weren't permanent. The next people to attempt, and succeed, to begin settlements in Canada was France.
France's first attempts at settlements met with failure, most likely due to the different temperatures (much colder than those of france). The man who claimed the area of Canada (at the Gaspé Peninsula) by sticking a cross in the land was Jacques Cartier. The settled area of Canada was named New France, after France. The French made connections with the native tribes in the area, which helped them greatly and the resources of the area were also a great help. The French then began trapping and fur hunting, almost leading the beaver to extinction. For a few centuries this was all fine and dandy until the year 1756, when the Seven Year's War began, ending a few years after in 1763. This war was a major loss for France, they had to secede most of (if not all) their land in North America to the English causing the British to have a major foothold in North America.
New France had then been renamed 'The Province of Quebec' (which had quite a bit of modern day North Eastern US) by the British (which is a little odd when Matthew introduces himself to Alfred). Things and goings-on were generally all right between the Province of Quebec, the Empire and the Thirteen colonies.
In 1774, England passed an act known as 'The Quebec Act' which allowed free practice of the Catholic faith, it expanded the area of the Province and restored the use of French civil law for private matters, Matthew was pretty happy with all this. The Quebec Act was passed after the Boston Tea Party, why? To ensure that riots and rebellion wouldn't start to happen within England's other colonies of course. And the Quebec Act didn't sit well with the Thirteen Colonies, becoming termed as one of the Intolerable Acts. All of this came to a head when the Revolutionary War began and in 1775, the US invaded Quebec. Matthew didn't stand for that, standing against the Continental Army and ultimately winning. This defeat was the first for the Continental Army and proving that the Canadians/Quebecois were still loyal to the crown, even though some Canadians had actively provided aid to the soldiers and joined their ranks. During the invasion, varying battles occurred which were won by the Canadians.
After the Revolutionary War, Matthew and Alfred didn't see each other often. Arthur would have kept the two separate, most likely to keep thoughts of independence out of Matthew's head. One of the next times that the brothers would see each other was during the War of 1812. The United States ended up declaring war on Britain because of tensions that had been mounting between the two countries. War was declared during the Napoleonic Wars, which basically left Canada (and Matthew) on their own. This war had varying battles and was taxing on Matthew emotionally as well as physically, he was being attacked by his brother to get rid of the other brother, both of whom he loves dearly. The boy was stuck and didn't know what to do other than defend himself. Each side had their wins and their losses but the battles that really hurt Matthew was the Battle of York. The US forces had taken over the town but ruined the capture by burning the city. For Matthew, that hurt more than fighting and he wondered why his brother would do such a thing. A few months after the burning of York, the British went down to Washington to burn it. The idea for burning down Washington was that of the British but Matthew felt it was justified, even if it did hurt. The war ended in 1815 with the Treaty of Ghent, which ceased fighting between the United States and England. This war, by the repelling of the strong United States forces, helped begin a sense of unity within British North America. Which was most notable between the English-speaking and French-speaking citizens of Upper and Lower Canada.
A few decades later the main basis of modern day Canada, on July 1, 1867 the provinces of Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia (NB and NS having been colonies at the time). The Canadian Confederation now existed, making Canada it's own country. Even though Canada was now it's own country with its own parliament, the British still had quite a bit of say. The rest of the provinces and territories were all British colonies and gradually joined Confederation to create modern day Canada. Confederation gave Matthew a growth spurt and some self confidence, as he was that much closer to gaining independence from the British. After the Confederation was made not much was going on in Canada until the World Wars. When Britain declared War on August 6th 1914, all of their areas and dominions declared war as well. During the second battle of Ypres, the Canadians were the only ones able to hold position against the chlorine gas used by the enemy. The Battle of the Somme marked Canadians as Shock Troops, causing them to be brought along at the head of varying battles. This caused Germans to prepare for the worse. The Canadian divisions were split among the British ones but it was decided to bring them together by Lord Byng. In 1917, the newly united divisions had their first greatest victory by capturing Vimy Ridge, an impregnable area that had been held by the German troops. This showed that the Canadians were good strategists whom Matthew was proud of and showing that Matthew and Canada could help out, even if they hadn't been in many wide scale wars before. Yet, Canada was still not independent.
After the Great War, there was the Roaring Twenties which was great for everyone. Then the Great Depression came along.
Then, soon after the Great Depression something huge came: World War Two. Canada declared war two weeks after the British, showing that they were beginning to take their own way in things. The Canadians were just as effective in this war as they were in the last; breaching lines and being rather useful in battles. One of the events they might be remembered best for is their liberation of the Netherlands and letting the Dutch royal family take refuge within Canada. The Dutch then saw the Canadians as liberators and saviours. This liberation is still honoured and appreciated by the Dutch, who send tens of thousands of tulips every year for the annual tulip festival.
When World War 2 ended a few things happened for Canada: Newfoundland joined Canada (becoming the province of Newfoundland and Labrador), divisions in the armed forces were disbanded and Canada became caught in the middle of the Cold War. Which wasn't so much fun and their foreign policy became tied with those of the US. Canada then had a Quiet Revolution by the Quebecois, the October Crisis (oh boy was that ever fun), Quebec tried to leave Canada again. Lester B. Pearson (Prime Minister from 1963-68) did some awesome work with the Suez Crisis. In 1965, Canada gained their own flag and stopped using the British one (as much). Then Pierre Elliott Trudeau came along and things were amazing, and he was friends with Fidel Castro so Matthew had time to hang out with his friend, Cuba. But Nixon said something that hurt Matthew quite a bit, he said that the special relationship between Canada and the United States was over. But... how could it be over? It couldn't be... And especially not because someone just randomly said it.
1982 was a very important year for Canada. Why you may ask? Matthew and Canada finally became independent from Britain.
As of now, Matthew's trying to take a bit of a break. But he's sick from the recession, has a load of work to do, helping out where he can in other countries, has to deal with Alfred, still feeling guilty and terrible about what he let happen to the natives (none of which is mentioned here or we'd be here for a while) and is trying to keep Quebec from leaving. He'd love to have a few days off but he's probably not getting one soon.
SAMPLES
First Person:
This certainly isn't my home and where the hell am I? And where's Kumataro?
Might as well message Alfred, or someone else, they probably won't get this though. [Sigh] Okay, so Alfred, this is Matthew. Canada, your brother? I live directly north of you if you can find where north is. I just woke up in this weird place and as I said before, I have no idea where the hell I am and there's this collar on me. Once I get my bearings a bit I'll look for you and Arthur and Francis if they're here. Don't get yourself hurt or anything.
To anyone else: if you have any idea where this is and wouldn't mind allying with me, that would be wonderful. I'd love to get as much help as I can about this place. And I'm Canada, not America.
Third Person:
Matthew hoped his invisibility would work in his favour for once in his life. He was in an unknown forest, in an unknown area where and he didn't know who else was around, or if anyone else was around at all. The trees were a bit barren this time of year but they were large enough to provide sufficient cover in the off chance anything happened. It wasn't a particularly bright day either, which helped in his favour and it wasn't too cold either. Matthew sighed as he tucked some hair behind his ear.
"I just hope that Alfred or Arthur or Francis are back home," Matthew thought to himself "and that I can find something to defend myself with." Hoping he would be all right, the blond headed further in (or out? He couldn't tell right now) the forest, glad that he'd been hunting (not just for game) before. He kept as quiet as possible, so as to not attract unwanted attention to himself. Something rustled in the bushes.
The rustling was loud, causing Matthew to twitch a little, and quickly head behind a tree to watch what came out. The bush didn't seem large enough to house anything too dangerous, but still, better to be safe than sorry. Oh, seemed it was just a few squirrels. Did he ever feel like an idiot. Matthew sighed a little at that, missing his bear. He just hoped that he found a familliar blond or face (very familliar, he saw it in the mirror everyday) soon and that they were when he did.
