Yoochun stared at the table while Yunho watched his father talk, they both had the same blank stare on their faces.
“Why didn’t you tell us?” Yunho asked his father across the table.
Hyo wasn’t reading his paper this time, wasn’t drinking his coffee, he didn’t do anything but sit and answer their questions, “Mya asked me not to. Jaejoong doesn’t like people knowing, I suppose he’s just too proud for sympathy.”
Yunho shook his head while Yoochun continued to stare quietly at the table, “How does he hide it so well? I mean..”
“His attitude that you’re so found of,” Hyo answered, “it distracted you pretty far from anything else.”
Yunho frowned, “He acts that way on purpose?!”
Hyo shrugged, “I don’t think it’s all an act, I do think he is a rebellious teenager with a lot of problems. But then so are you two and all of your classmates. I think it’s better you two know about it, so you can understand and deal with him better. Mya says that Jaejoong won’t accept any sort of medical therapy, so, that does mean his body is very much on it’s own for healing."

Yoochun remained silent as the other two talked, Yunho elbowed him, “What?”
“Are you alright, Yoochun? I know it’s a lot to hear.” Hyo said, crossing his arms.
Yoochun raised his eyes to him, his face still as empty as before, “Why’d you bring someone else into our lives who’s just going to die?”
Yunho’s eyes widened at Yoochun’s direct words, “Chun!”
“Don’t be so dumb,” He spat at Yunho, “That’s exactly what Dad’s trying to tell us, he’s trying to say that there’s nothing helping Jae so he’s going die. That’s what happens in that situation, Yunho.” He stood, slamming back his chair into the wall as he stomped away from the conversation.
Yunho’s head whirled around to his father, “He’s not going to die is he? He’s too young for that kind of thing.”
His father rubbed his forehead and sighed, “Jaejoong’s illness was deemed terminal. Mya says they don’t know how long-“
“How can that be true? He’s so young! And so..full of energy! It can’t be real.”
 “I know it does-“

“I don’t want to hear about this,” Yunho snapped as he stood. He began to walk away but then circled back, “Why didn’t you tell us? Don’t we have a right to know?”
“It wasn’t up to me,” His father sighed, the conversation was emotionally draining for both of them, “They asked me not to and I was trying to respect that. The whole situation is rather fragile.”
Yunho shook his head and walked away without another word. He didn’t really understand why he was so angry, he didn’t know why he felt so upset. He wanted to talk to Yoochun, he wanted to share his frustration. He’d thought he’d seen him go out so he followed out the door. Outside in the cool air, Jaejoong sat on the front step of the porch, once again smoking.
Yunho sucked in his breath, not expecting to see Jaejoong when he walked outside. He didn’t know what to say or how to act. He considered just jumping back into the house, but instead he said, “Should you really be smoking?”
He didn’t know why he said it, he kind of wished he hadn’t, it sounded like a joke. He hadn’t meant to joke. Jaejoong looked over his shoulder and blew out a particularly long breath of smoke. At first his eyes were narrowed but then the cold look on his face softened.
“Yeah I shouldn’t, but it helps with the pain.”

The word pain, coming from Jaejoong’s own lips, made the concept real. It sounded strange and foreign, Jaejoong didn’t look like he was in pain. Or maybe Yunho just couldn’t recognize this certain kind of pain.
Yunho looked down at his feet, “I’m sorry for hitting y-“
“Oh no, come on not you.” Jaejoong sighed exasperatedly, rolling his head back around toward to look at the other, “I at least thought you wouldn’t be like that. Don’t do the sympathy thing, I don’t want any part of it.”
  “I just-“
“You had every right to hit me, I was antagonizing you. Just because you found out I’m sick doesn’t change that, I was still calling you gay."

Yunho’s face flushed, the words still bothered him.
“I’m still the same asshole you hate. Why should my vomiting change that?” Jaejoong asked, taking a quick drag on his joint before he continued, “If something so simple can change your opinion, you’re a pretty flaky person. I thought you’d be different.”
Yunho frowned, “So you want me to hate you? Why?”
“Because it’s real,” Jaejoong answered, patting the wood beside him, suggesting that Yunho sit down, “people’s sympathetic bullshit doesn’t do anything for me. You hating me is something real, it isn’t a show you’re putting on just so neither of us feels awkward.”

“You’re weird.” Yunho replied, sitting down beside him.
Jaejoong nodded, sucking on the joint between his fingers. Yunho glanced over at him, “I thought your Mom said you take medications, how come you need to smoke to get rid of the pain?”
“I don’t like taking them.” Jaejoong answered.
“Why?”
“They cause extreme dizziness and drowsiness and I’d like to be awake for the life I’ve got left,” He answered flatly, the words made Yunho shiver but he tried to keep the casual conversation going.
“And how come just pot? Or do you do other things too?”
Jae shrugged, “It depends. Any other questions?
“Why did you get kicked out of your last school?” Yunho ventured, already knowing the answer.
Jaejoong grinned turning his head to look at the other. In the light of the street lamp, Yunho saw for maybe the first time, how pink Jaejoong’s lips were, how soft his eyes could get, “I was having “relations” with a professor.” Jaejoong laughed, running a hand through his hair, “School didn’t like that.”

“Why do you do that?” Yunho asked, “Why do you..sleep with everyone? Are you trying to prove something?”
The small gleam faded from Jae’s eyes as he flicked away what was left of his joint, “I don’t sleep with everyone,” He said cooly, “Still have yet to sleep with you.”
Yunho sucked in his breath and stood up, he didn’t want to be part of the conversation anymore, not when he was actually part of the conversation.
“Hey,” Jaejoong grabbed his hand, “I didn’t to ask you any questions. That’s not fair.”
Yunho looked down at him, hating him, hating the way he wanted to listen to whatever he had to say. As he sat down he growled, “I’m not gay.”
Jaejoong smiled, “Yeah, yeah I know.”

“Then stop saying I am!” He hissed, crossing his arms.
Jae chuckled as he leaned back on his elbows, his torso stretching out over the steps, “So, why so angry all the time?”
Yunho raised an eyebrow, “Now I was assuming you’d ask how our mother died.”
“I was getting to it.” Jaejoong shrugged, “But if you want to answer that first, by all means.”
“She killed herself,” He answered flatly, looking for the usual shock that came after that statement. But Jaejoong didn’t look shocked, he just sat patiently, waiting for Yunho to continue, “She uh, was really depressed and she..slit her..”
“It’s okay,” Jaejoong said softly, gently placing his hand on Yunho’s, “You don’t need to talk about it.”
Yunho sighed, “She just...I’m sorry, finding out about your.."
Jaejoong’s lips parted like he was going to say something but he thought against it. He regretted talking to Yunho like this, it was just better to make Yunho hate him, that was a much simpler relationship.
