Excerpt from My Night, a one act play.
The scene is a dingy local pub, Nick leans against the back wall, surrounded by people yet somehow still alone. Soothing beats and keyboard strokes passively assault from every direction, commanded by a crew of elegantly dishevelled hipsters, just different enough to be alternative, but similar enough to have mainstream appeal. A single cigarette from the table directly the to front and left of our protagonist fouls the air with it's stench of death, dampening Nicks already distinctly wet night. A smiling female appears from behind a stranger, her face warm and welcoming. Nick is holding a cheap blue jacket, which he now clutches slightly tighter, anticipating exactly what desire this girl might have for him.
Very Attractive Girl: Hey, I'm not hitting on you or anything, but is your name paul?
Nick: No, but I do know someone named paul.
Very Attractive Girl: Oh. (pause) Ok. (pause) I wasn't hitting on you.
Nick: I understand.
Very Attractive Girl exits
