Today wasn't totally unproductive

Today in...
  1. Working: Pounded away at my Oracle/Moodle integration scripts until I finally got it to handle withdrawn students properly. Damn thing was recalcitrant. Sometimes you beg, cajole, bribe, and plead, but your software still won't work. Not until you threaten it with a massive logic restructuring. Then they snap into shape.
  2. Reading: Finished Wintersmith, because you can never have enough Terry Pratchett. I'm hesitant to start reading another novel right now, what with NaNoWriMo leering at me around the corner. I'm about three months behind in my Scientific Americans, though, so I'll probably browse through them for awhile. Or, I've been thinking abour re-reading John Crowley's Little, Big.
  3. Writing: Revised a few pages of "Fookin' Britches". Having Dropkick Murphys playing at top volume on my computer while drinking a bottle of Buffalo Bill's Pumpkin Ale has really helped me zero on in Zoe Garrick. This is good, since Zoe is one of the main characters of The Return of Deacon Dread. And as I've been rewriting this, I've been learning that Zoe has Issues. Capital-I Issues. This is good; I was afraid she was going to be dull.

And I have the feeling that these lyrics will be important:

WORLD OF HATE by Dropkick Murphys

A feeling inside in the back of my head
Like a song you still know from so long ago
And I wouldn't change a thing
Like a car driving by triggers something in my mind
Am I retrieving my direction or just charging forward blind
Am I everything that you wanted me to be
Have I lost that condition, a connection I couldn't see

Til the end like a friend stands by you again
And I wouldn't change a thing
Toe to toe, friend or foe, it's all that I know
And I wouldn't change a thing

As the years pass us by, will I still make the grade
Can I really offer anything, and will my soul be saved
Can you cleanse me of...drive out the swine
Am I only falling farther, can you keep me safe from harm
The memories you build in the house on a hill
Would you really change a thing
Corrected mistakes in a world full of hate
Never changes anything

Til the end like a friend stands by you again
Toe to toe, friend or foe, it's all that I know
Til the end like a friend stands by you again
And I wouldn't change a thing
Toe to toe, friend or foe, it's all that I know
And I wouldn't change a thing
