I saw three movies in theatres in the last two weeks! I am now going to sort of review them? OBVIOUSLY SPOILERS, but not plot outlines.
I actually really really liked LHotL, but I can't really think of many (if any people) I would reccommend it to. HEAVY on the gore and violence so you'' have to have really strong stomach. A man's hand gets put in a garbage disposal-- at which even I gagged a little, something about the gurgling sound of the blood and bones--a hammer driven through his head, and a man's head gets visibly microwaved. Also, weirdly enough, there are scenes where first aid is administered (cauterizing wounds, bone-resetting, stitches) which are equally grotesque as the violence.
I genuinely think this is a good movie, so I'm a little disappointed with the poor reviews it's getting-- I'm attributing it mostly to the fact that critics are still uncomfortable with on-screen rape. I don't understand at alllll how they consider murder acceptable to film and plot-relevant, emotionally-affecting, reasonably "tasteful" (if the word can ever even apply to a rape scene).
Sarah Paxton, yes from Darcy's Wild Life haha, was terrific although I'm still unsure about the painfully overt sexualization at the beginning of the movie. I thought it was out of place since I didn't find the movie was making a statement about anything of the sort but it seemed to smart of a movie to use sex to sell the story, so blantantly. She and Emily of New Moon were both impressive when trying to escape the kidnappers, which I liked. They never stopped trying. Sarah was amazing in particular, the swimming was beautiful.
Garrett Dillahunt (from that Terminator show) played the ~killer dad and every time he would do his creepy little John Henry smile, I couldn't help but go "I'm a terminator!" I also got ridiculously attached to the son Justin and have decided that after the ending, so fucked up, the family adopted him and he and Sarah had awkward emotionally damaged love. idk I want fic now.
Wow, this getting unexpectedly long, I didn't realize I had so much to say. The cinematography was gorgeous-- on par with All The Boys Love Mandy Lane-- and I hope this will be a continuing trend with horror films since I've recently developed an interest in them.
I actually found the entire story very tragic. It disturbed me when people in the audience cheered as the family attacked/tortured the ~evil family. I wanted them to die, but only so Sarah and Justin would make it out alive. My understanding of the film was-- look at this poor family, look how good people can be driven to cruelty, savagery. They are ruined forever in a way-- this film is less about revenge than about how far reaching thoughtless acts of evil can be.
Haunting in Connecticut SUCKED BALLS. It wasn't scary or thought-provoking at alll. Completely called the fucking ending. Obviously the only reason I went to see it is because I never recovered from Beaver's character assassination in season two of Veronica Mars. Kyle Gallner, I LOVE YOU. Finally, a movie/show where he doesn't die and isn't a psychopath! Granted, he was a terminally cancer patient who was temporarily possessed, but it all turned out in the end. I JUST LOVE HIM OK. HE WILL BE A BIG STAR, I'M GOING TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.
I Love You, Man was adorable and hilarious in every way. I liked all the characters wtf, even the girlfriend. Andy Samberg was the fucking bomb. Finally a romantic comedy about two straight dudes learning to love each other!
