The alarm clock peals;
a puritan hammer in the belfry -
a redundant hammer hard aslant
the ingot cast askew.
Dancing on the yoke,
the crown asway, aflirt with wakefulness,
aflirt with quaking blankets
life astir below their landscape.
This hideous campanile,
this bureau holds aloft the resonance. So far,
this reviled reveille's
aflight the pillow's reach.
And, so, our rats arise,
their revenge; ringing rent asunder,
revenge fumbled like the coffee grinds
as percolator grumbles.
