I had a small insight yesterday. I’d gone to buy a phonecard, and while I was walking there I noticed the kittens around the house block. These are just your average kittens, pretty cute, miaow a lot, run around and chase dogs, etc. and one of the women comes to feed them. As I was walking back, however, I noticed something strange: these kittens seem to have two mothers.
That sounds a little strange, but I shall explain. Two kittens and three cats seem to be around the general area all the time. One cat is ginger, and most ginger cats are male. One cat is tortoiseshell, and most tortoiseshell cats are female. Now, you may say that these cats may be the exception to the rule, but the exceptions tend to be infertile cats, whatever gender they are. The final cat is the same colour as the kittens - a sort of creamy orangey colour.
There are a few more oddities around - I’ve also spotted a ginger kitten, although I suspect he may have died since I’ve seen him. As well as this, none of the three cats seem to be particularly territorial/annoyed by the kittens.
I don’t know very much about daddy cats, but I’d assume that they would stay away, especially since mother cats tend to get very violent (my cat decided to try to punish me when she was mothering). If the cream cat is female, why’s she letting the tortoiseshell female in with her kittens? If the cream cat is male, why isn’t the tortoiseshell getting pissed off? And why aren’t either of them getting pissed off at that bleeding ginger?
Anyone who has ever put two cats in the same postal code area room knows that they cannot get along. Backs will arch, hair will stand, spit will launch at full speed … it’s definitely a fun sight, when you’re a spectator. But no, it’s unusual for cats to have much more than mutual tolerance, and rare for friendship.
The only logical explanation that I can think of is that, out of the cream/tortoiseshell, one of them is the mother, and the other one is a babysitter.
But when cats start employing babysitters, this must mean the end of civilisation as we know it. When cats start acting like humans, it must mean that they’re plotting. And when cats plot, it can get cat-astrophic.
If you have gotten this far without wanting to push me off a small planet, congratulations. Join the Stop The Cats movement! Also, you must be damned bored. Please reward yourself with a cup of tea.
