So I checked out 5 different pads this weekend, and I narrowed my search down to two different options, one in Alameda, one in Oakland, each with their own positive and negative attributes. It;s a rather difficult choice, and so I'm going to try to get some input. Here are the two scenerios:
1) Alameda. 3 blocks from a really nice public beach, <1 mile from work, backyard overlooks an artificial lagoon. I'd get two small rooms for under $600/mo., both of which get lots of sunlight. Alameda is a suburb of Oakland. Very safe, very nice, very comfortable. It looks and feels like a suburb, sort of like Needham, just with less white people, and with a beach. Probably a 30-40 minute bike ride t the oakland hills, where I intend on bike riding in whatever free time I have. Roommates are nice, one girl did apparently used to date one of the dudes from Bad Brains, a seminal punk rock band in the 80's. House has one nice dog, aging.
2) Oakland. This pad is in a warehouse that has been subdivided into a number of units, largely occupied by bohemian artist types. 5 blocks from the inter-city rail station, 3 blocks from the bridge that I'd cross to get onto Alameda, ~4 miles from work. I'd get one very large room, completely unfinished, for under $400/mo. No natural sunlight. The pad is huge, filled with artist stuff, there is access to the building roof through the kitchen, which has a gas range. Located in a less desirable neighborhood, though no episodes of violent crime are thought to have happened there since anyone (supposedly) can remember. Easy access to $3 burrito stands. 20 bike ride to the oakland hills. Roommates seem pretty cool, really nice. All are artists, and thus off-beat, but not really hippies. Apartment has a beautiful friendly german shepard.
If any gets a feeling from one of these descriptions, I'd dig the input. Not going to guarentee that I ultimately take that advice, but I'd dig input all the same. Email me or post here.
