so, my lamp teacher fred is very enthusiastic and supportive of ideas and peoples' projects, almost to the point where you start to consider the idea that he might not be genuine in his statements about your work. today though during the crit of some people's work he just went off on them about it being crap, or them having lame excuses for why things aren't adjusted to profection (such as not being willing to spend an extra 5 bucks to make a print look awesome instead of like crap). he got himself all worked up about it and there was no stopping him once he started talking about a piece being crap, and about all the potential it had, that hadn't been tapped into. it was sort of awkward to be sitting there listening to him rip apart someone, but at the same time it was also validating for those of us who got good comments back from him, and made his comment on my lamp of, "it's perfect just the way it is" mean that much more.
it's always nice to see why someone is considered a good professor, and that they actually are good at their job, even if sometimes it means getting shitty feed back on your own work.
now that i've had this little break to write this, i must go write my art history paper. yay vaulting!
