"Oh don't talk to me like that, Angelus..."

The tone of her voice was another stab of memory, the sound of Darla's disdain for humanity and weakness and sentimentality.

"... even though you lost your soul you still wreak the stench of vermin. It's going to take a handful of years before that fades..."

Scowling, I couldn't keep from snapping back at her. "I seem to remember a human body dying messily from syphillis, myself... but we're not here to talk about our alter egos, are we?"

I was still in a mild state of shock at Darla's appearance, not to mention the fact that she was, once again a fucking vampire, when Faith chimed in. In her usual style, there wasn't any hesitation. Attitude first, questions later. Or was that attitude first, last and always? Whichever, she made it clear Darla didn't scare her a bit.

"Thought we cleared that up last time Peaches? He's kinda moved on now. You know. To me. Looks like somebody just upped the stakes. What? Was somebody all jealous? Awwww. Too bad."

Now this was a little different. Faith was laying claim on me. Considering that my experience with women in the last two centuries or so involved me being the one doing the claiming in one way or another, this would be an almost amusing experience. Except for the fact that it involved Darla. Nothing was ever simple with Darla, not even when we were on the same side, sharing bed and blood.

"Oh, I know what she wants. She wants you baby. Why else you think she went out and got herself vamped and came lookin' for ya?"

Faith's hands played over the leather of my jeans, and just like always, I responded immediately to her touch.

"Been there and done that already, honey... You can go ahead and take care of my dear boy. Besides, I've got new projects to concentrate on now."

And that I liked least of all. It was one thing when Darla and I had spats and misunderstandings. When we were cross-purposes, all sorts of hell had a tendency to break loose. Faith, for her part, was determined to demonstrate to Darla just where everything stood... and laid... by standing in front of me, looping her arms behind my neck and giving me a hell of a standing lap dance. Darla, well, seemed unimpressed.

"Mmm, don't know, seems to me you and Angelus here are slowly losing grips on the power you have over your family. I am here -- thanks to my darling Dru and her lovely Spike."

My temper flared.

"Spike and Drusilla? Goddammit, I should've known those two lackwits would be behind this. Don't know why I thought either of them would listen to what they were fucking told. You think I'm losing control of the family? Daddy's just about to hand out some punishments."

Faith had walked away, and she and Darla were sizing each other up.

"Unless you was extendin' that kiss to me. Then we might be able to work somethin' out."

"I'll have to say my boy's taste has gotten better... but maybe after you get yourself cleaned up because frankly, I'm not into sloppy seconds."

With a deep-set frown, and an intention to have my way, I strode forward until I was towering over Darla.

"Spike and Dru disobeyed me when they made you. But that's not your doing. This isn't 1880, Darla-- I head the Order of Aurelius now, and that is the truth. Stay or go. Your choice."

((Open to Faith and Darla.))
