Character Information
General
Canon Source: Tales of The Abyss
Canon Format: Video Game
Character's Name: Colonel Jade Curtiss, 3rd Division, Malkuth Imperial Forces
Character's Age: 37
Conditional: If your character is 13 years of age or under, please clarify how they will be played. N/A
What form will your character's NV take? fonpad, kind of like an ipad. Not too dissmilar to something his rival Dist might have developed in one pont in time. Jade is proficient enough with technology that he'd probably adapt to using it rather quickly.
Abilities
Strengths:
Physical
Despite his constant protests to the contrary, Jade is first and foremost a soldier and therefore possesses all of the physical qualities of one: he is in top physical form for his age, can run for long distances, easily lift heavy objects, has had extensive combat training, etc. He is a master of the spear, although he can also presumably use other weapons with some proficiency if required. Additionally, his prowess with fonic artes is truly exceptional, making him quite the force to be reckoned with on the battlefield.
Mental:
Jade has been labeled a genius his entire life, and with good cause; his intelligence definitely far surpasses that of most people. He is extremely knowledgeable on an array of topics, and quickly gains expertise on the things that he is not . He is highly analytical and observant, often picking up on things that others miss entirely. He is able to act quickly and with precision in situations where most people would falter.
Emotional:
Jade is able to remain logical and rational in extremely stressful situations, and is comfortable in leadership roles. Jade also possesses a good--if not a bit cynical and sadistic--sense of humor.
Weaknesses:
Physical
Jade does not exhibit any physical weaknesses beyond what would be expected for a human male in his mid-thirties; in fact, he appears even younger than his true age. Additionally, his glasses actually aren't used as corrective lenses as his eyesight is fine; they are there to help control his fonic artes.
Mental:
Jade does not exhibit any mental weaknesses beyond normal for his age and experiences.
Emotional:
The complex world of human emotions is definitely not Jade's forte. He has great difficulty feeling empathy for others. He will often be blunt, logical and uncaring in very sensitive situations. On a positive note, he has definitely come a long way since he was younger.
Character's Canon Abilities:
Jade has a wide variety of fonic artes (spells) at his disposal. He can harness all of the elements (earth, water, fire, wind, and arcane. ) He cannot cast any healing or regenerative spells. He is also a master of the spear.
Conditional: If your character has no superhuman canon abilities, what dormant ability will you give them? N/A
Weapons:
A spear which he summons from his arm.
History/Personality/Plans/etc.
Character History:
Jade Curtiss was born as Jade Balfour and grew up in Keterburg, a snowy resort town in the country of Malkuth. Unfortunately, not much is known about his parents, other than that he and his younger sister Nephry Balfour were orphaned as children. Jade was a genius and a prodigy in the usage of fonic artes (magic), and often would leave his town and kill harmless monsters "for fun" to demonstrate his magical prowess.
His closest friends were his sister, the son of the Emperor Prince Peony, and Saphir Wyon Neis, another child genius and fontech (engineering) prodigy. He attended a private school together with his friends and sister under the instruction of Gelda Nebilim, a retired Locrian Colonel and Seventh Fonist (without going too much into detail, essentially seventh fonists have the ability to heal, amongst other things.) Whilst Jade was a prodigy when it came to fonic artes, he had absolutely no affinity for the seventh fonon (one is born either with or without the ability). Jade very much wanted the capacity to use the seventh fonon and "know everything"; and as such began to admire someone for the first time.
When he was nine years old, he formulated the conceptual theory of fomicry (cloning) of both animate and inanimate objects. This occurred when Nephry's doll became broken, and (presumably) as a gesture of kindness towards his younger sister, he used a fonic arte to replicate the doll. This was indicative of Jade's often abnormal thinking despite being a genius: that he could not grasp the concept of what it meant for living things to die; and instead favored fomicry as a means to "cheat" death. Professor Nebilim, who acted as a sort of mentor for the children in Keterburg, attempted to instill into Jade a strong set of morals that were evidently lacking within him. According to his sister, Jade slowly began to change and become more "human" under Professor Nebilim's guidance. However, Jade's continuing quest to use the Seventh Fonon ended in tragedy when he unleashed a fonic arte he was unable to control, setting fire to the professor's house. He and Saphir escaped with Professor Nebilim, who was badly hurt in the explosion and was near death. In order to "save" the professor, Jade employed fomicry to create a replica. Of course, the real Professor Nebilim died; and, due to imperfections in the replication process, her replica was "incomplete" and went out of control. Jade and Saphir vowed that together they would one day create the "perfect replica" and bring back the Professor. After the tragedy of the Professor's death, Jade reverted to his previous, much more inhumane self.
An unknown amount of time transpired, and sometime in his teenage years, Jade's talents were recognized by the famous Curtiss military family, and he was adopted. He completed his schooling, presumably through the Malkuth military. Together he and Saphir engaged in a large amount of research not only into fomicry, but also into hyperresonance, isofons, and other concepts relating to fonic artes. Jade often extracted replication data from the corpses of his fallen enemies on the battlefield, earning him the nickname of "Jade the Necromancer". After the previous Malkuth Emperor ordered the destruction of the island of Hod in order to cover up fomicry research being conducted, Jade evidently had a change of heart and banned the replication of living things due to "ethical concerns". It was at this time that he and Saphir had a falling out, as Saphir still wanted to continue fomicry research, and accused Jade of "abandoning" the Professor. However, the truth was that he had realized that even a perfect replica of Nebilim would not have her memories, and would therefore be unable to offer him the forgiveness he sought.
Jade continued his life in the military and attained the rank of Colonel, and also became Emperor Peony IX's right-hand man when his best friend ascended the throne. Saphir continued his fomicry and fontech research, also ascending within the Order of Lorelei to eventually become a Locrian Colonel and God-General under Commandant Van Grants. He changed his name to Dist the Rose, although he was known as Dist the Reaper. Nephry stayed behind in Keterburg, where she eventually married Viscount Osborne and became the Governor of her home town.
Jade becomes further entangled in the plot of the game when Emperor Peony asks his assistance in preventing another war from breaking out with Kimlasca. Jade travels to Daath to seek out the help of Fon Master Ion, the religious leader of the Order or Lorelei. Due to a division within the Order as to how to follow the Score (a prophecy), Jade ends up helping Ion and his bodyguard Anise Tatlin escape from Daath. The game's storyline begins when Jade encounters ducal heir Luke fon Fabre of Kimlasca and Tear Grants--at the time displaced in Malkuth as a result of an accident involving hyperresonance-- and subsequently asks for his aid in delivering a peace treaty letter to King Ingobert of Kimlasca.
Through a series of events Jade learns that Luke is a replica, which causes him to feel responsible in a way for Luke’s “birth”. The companions eventually encounter Asch the Bloody, one of the Six God-Generals and also the original Luke fon Fabre; and after Luke destroys the town Akzeriuth due to Van Grants’ machinations, Jade learns that Van had kidnapped the original Luke and created his replica. Luke and Asch are perfect isofons; in other words, perfect replicas. Much to Jade’s dismay, he discovers that Dist has been involved in Van’s plan of overturning the Score, and has been the one illegally continuing fomicry research and the creation of replicas. However, Dist has not been doing it because he actually believes in abolishing the Score; but because by cooperating with Van he can obtain Professor Nebilim’s replication data and continue his research to revive the Professor.
Van's complete plan is ultimately revealed, in that he plans to destroy the world itself in order to abolish the planet’s memory, which is the Score foretold two thousand years ago by the prophet Yulia Jue. Van intended to then resurrect the world by utilizing replicas- not just of people, but of the Outer Lands as well. During talks to end an outbreak of war between Malkuth and Kimlasca, Jade finds out that Van had been the one of the research subjects on Hod when it had been destroyed; which not only explained why he had known so much about fomicry, but also his hatred of the Score, as it had predicted the destruction of Hod. As a result of these various events, Jade witnesses Luke and Asch’s constant struggle regarding who the “real Luke” is, in addition to various other problems that have occurred as a result of fomicry. This changes his views on replicas and fomicry significantly.
Ultimately, the final battle takes place in Eldrant, and Van is defeated. Jade vows to continue his fomicry research, as a way to ensure replicas’ place in the world as more than mere substitutes.
Point in Canon: This Jade's canon is taken from after these events, immediately post-game.

Character Personality:
Jade is above all else intelligent, logical, and collected. However--as would be expected from a genius--his true personality is very complex, and very few ever glimpse the "real Jade" behind the smiling face and glasses.
In his interactions he is generally at first polite and affable, which is also useful as a distancing tool. In other words, he is mannerly, but not warm or particularly friendly with those he does not know. Due to his genius, reputation, and his skill in both fonic artes and combat, he can also become very frightening if warranted. Therefore, he is usually feared by both allies and enemies alike. Jade often uses this to his advantage if he needs to; but he does take his role as a military official seriously and despite what the rumors would say, is a law-abiding citizen mostly.
Jade is also frequently a sarcastic and sardonic individual who enjoys teasing others, mostly for amusement, a sort of "social experiment", or a bit of both. It's difficult to say exactly when he will let this particular aspect of his personality show, as it's usually entirely at his discretion. Generally, it can either be a way to gauge a new acquaintance’s tolerances for his biting sarcasm--a sort of thing that would spark his curiosity--or as a way of relating with those who are close to him (he and Peony, for example, usually engage in witty banter). He will also often employ this tactic to evade answering questions or to change the subject. Jade utilizes his dark sense of humor and propensity for teasing others readily---even in vastly inappropriate situations-- because he enjoys making other people uncomfortable. In this regard Jade is definitely a bit of a sadist, especially since he does not particularly care if people are hurt or offended.
Jade is often seen with a smile on his face, so it's generally impossible to know exactly what he's thinking. In that vein, Jade is exceptionally adept at reading others to discern their feelings and motives. He often uses this to his advantage. He is good at getting what he wants from others without them ever being aware that he has manipulated them. He is also fairly lazy, preferring others to do the grunt work and/or the explaining.
Jade's intelligence--compounded with his often cold demeanor --has alienated him from others his whole life. Especially in his younger years he was very isolated from all but a handful of people, and he preferred it that way. This has never really been a problem for him, as he has clearly prioritized focusing on his studies, his research, or the military--whichever was the most prevalent at the time. He is usually unable to express his feelings to others--in fact, he generally prefers not to at all. In many ways he is a very emotionally repressed individual, preferring the world of logic and science above all else, at times with total disregard for the consequences to living things. In other words, he at times seems to lack a conscience entirely. He does have one though; the events that led him to ban fomicry in his twenties appeared to be a wake-up-call of sorts, and he is only becoming more humane as he ages. After the events of the game, he is even slightly more open to actually fostering connections with other people.
However, that said there are a few people in his life with whom he is close and who know some of the deeper aspects of the Necromancer. While little is known of his parents, Professor Gelda Nebilim did act as a sort of mother figure to the young Jade Balfour, and he mourns her death even still; both because he sees her death as his responsibility, but also because he had formed a deep attachment to her. Emperor Peony IX has been his best friend since they were children, and is the only person who really seems to know how to get under Jade's skin. It is known that he did make one good friend while in military school, Jasper Cadogan, with whom he still keeps some contact. He also evidently cares deeply for his sister Nephry, and despite his constant protests does not entirely despise Dist/Saphir. By the end of the journey to save the world, he also has grown close with his companions (especially Luke and Anise). His experience with them ultimately changes him, as he opens up to his companions and even becomes somewhat warmer towards others.

Oh dear, this isn't good at all.
Well, isn't this an interesting contraption. Perhaps I can use it to ask for help.
Attention. This is Colonel Jade Curtiss, Commander of the Third Division of the Malkuth Imperial Forces. I am afraid I don't know where I am or how I got here. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Third Person Sample
Jade was very, very annoyed.
His eyes had fluttered open, heavy from a deep sleep. Jade had lazily reached for his glasses on the nightstand, when he suddenly realized that he was not in his bed at home in Grand Chokmah. He also was not in his cabin on the Tartarus II, or on His Majesty's couch, or even lying in a gutter somewhere. He briefly panicked, knowing that he and Peony had not had that much to drink last night--or had they?--so the fact that he was laying on the ground, outside, half undressed, glasses askew, with a blinding headache and a dull backache was....quite disturbing, to say the least.
"Well well, this is certainly a surprise...."
He sat up, rubbing at his temples. He felt terrible, as if he had not only gone on some terrific bender, but managed to get into a few bar brawls as well. The things he got into when he grudgingly went along with one of Peony's grand schemes...
Sighing, Jade assessed his surroundings: an overgrown field of dirt, grass and clay, with what appeared to be strategically placed markers that Jade didn't recognize. There also seemed to be a delightfully tetanus-inducing chainlink fence surrounding the field. Beyond that, Jade thought he could make out the skyline of a large city, although it certainly wasn't Grand Chokmah, Daath, or even Baticul. The fonons in the air were greatly diminished, and if Jade did not know better he'd surmise that he was not even on Auldrant...
His gaze wandered to a few feet away, where he spotted a lone flat rectanguar object. Moving closer, he ascertained that it was a fon machine of some sort. In the process of flipping it over in his gloved hands, it seemed to activate, coming alive with his very touch. Several options floated into view on the glowing screen..."Post", "Call", "Audio", "Video", "Camera", "Apps", "Music", and "Games". The Necromancer frowned, briefly fiddling with each of these options as he tried to understand the device's exact function.
Jade could not help but muse that this was precisely the sort of complex fon machine Dist would have built and used as his 'revenge journal'. In fact, if Jade had not been certain that the fool was rotting away in prison, he almost would have thought him responsible for this sort of inane stunt...
"What an idiot, " Jade sighed, looking away from the device and moving to stand up.
Wherever he was, it definitely wasn't Auldrant. As he had suspected, the presence of fonons was minute at best and he didn't even remotely recognize the architecture of this city. No, something had happened to him unexpectedly, and Jade so hated surprises.
