There's falling, falling, and falling. supernatural. castiel. 200 words. g.
There's falling, falling, and falling. The same word three times, but each one carries a different weight, a different meaning, a different cadence on the tongue so distinct you can almost taste it. You can literally Fall, tear out your Grace, and be reborn as a human or you can fall so hard and so fast that what you become is barely recognized as an angel anymore... Or you can take one misstep, stumble, and then fall into what amounts to some horrible in-between space where you're neither fully angel, nor fully human, and definitely not a demon.
And that last variant is where he's been ever since he gave up everything for one mortal boy who gives him, in return, nothing but the usual human failing. Honestly, he should have given up on Dean ages ago, but there's something about him that confuses and frustrates and makes him feel and if he stops protecting him for even a second, that will all be gone and he'll lose everything all over again.
He's starting to grow weary of losing. If there's one thing he knows for certain (and there really isn't much he does know for certain anymore), it's that.
