Second - pretty heavy and I suppose not surprising as California can be a microcosm of the nation and you just delineated the Red/Blue State issue: urban centers are populated who are used to (after being forced to) get along and therefor to a greater extent allow that the feelings and rights of others (even those with whom they disagree) are valid; where outside of urban centers, the population is more likely to take the "there is one way and it is our way or the highway" mentality. Oddly, these are the feelings that the DNC and RNC tend to tap in national elections.
