Abilities
Character's Canon Abilities: Eridan's powers have not been thoroughly examined in canon; however, he is supposed to have "white science" powers. Basically, this acts almost identically to magic (wherein he uses a wand in order to blast things), but according to him his powers are rooted in science and not fakey fake stuff like magic. While he assumes that it was his wand that gave him the ability to harness his powers, it is implied in canon that his wizardly attributes are actually connected to mysterious angels that he fought against earlier in the comic. He also has a canon-based "sylladex," which allows him to carry several items at a time without juggling everything in his hands.

Character Personality:
On the surface, Eridan seems to be an egomaniacal jerk who tends towards the dramatic (he would call it theatrical). He has a strong affinity for war and violence, and has a caste-born dislike for all land dwellers. He tries to act the way he wants others to perceive him, leading him to be cocky, self-absorbed and more than a little arrogant. Unfortunately, one of Eridan's greatest flaws is his tendency to go overboard with everything he tries to do, and this generally makes him look less like a self-assured prince of the sea and more like an attention-starved baby. Most people, after having even just one conversation with him, can see that he's actually not the hottest cat on the walk like he tries to pretend to be. He's desperate to have people either like him or hate him in ways that will fulfill the troll relationship quadrants, and actively seeks out as many people as he can to try and form some sort of relationship with them. He makes snap judgments, and one conversation is all he needs to have with someone in order to decide whether he likes them or hates them, and he'll often assume that they share whatever feelings he does. His irrationality also makes for very bad decisions; he tends to prepare for the worst and, despite being the Prince of Hope, he has very little of it when situations start going bad.
Underneath the exterior act of an attention-starved, arrogant jackass, Eridan actually fosters quite a healthy dose of self-loathing. He secretly doesn't feel as if he's as good as he tries to pretend he is, and this usually manifests itself whenever a conversation that started out pleasant turns negative. The self-loathing he feels stems from the fact that, on some level, he knows he's too desperate, and oftentimes when things start going wrong he'll place the blame on himself. (Of course, he'll quickly turn it around and try to make everyone else the reason for why his life is so hard.) Eridan's snap-judgments become even more erratic and poorly planned when he becomes upset or angry; it leads him to killing his former moirail, as well as one of his friends, out of a need to prove himself to be better than the rest and worth everyone's time. Whenever Eridan gets upset or mad, he takes it out on whatever might be easiest for him to do so - whether it be on the people he perceives have wronged him, or himself.
Despite all of his shortcomings (and there are many), Eridan has the potential to be a pretty good person. He's shown himself to be nice when he wants to be, and if his desperation ever took backseat to his honest feelings, he would probably find himself to be a more well-liked individual. Eridan is incredibly emotional and if someone were able to get past his tough-guy exterior, his low self-esteem and his knee-jerk reactions to bad situations, they would find him to be a good, loyal friend and incredibly adept at fulfilling whatever role their relationship required of him. Unfortunately, it's hard to get to this point with him because of his desperation; he tries too hard to get people to like him (or hate him, in the cases of kismesissitude), and when there aren't immediate results, he immediately feels as though he's failed in some way and retreats into his tough guy, "I don't need anyone" attitude.
Eridan has a fascination with magic, even though he constantly states that it doesn't exist. He often rails on the concept of magic, and yet at the same time he finds it enchanting and often writes stories about it. When he confronts Rose about her new dark magic powers, he tries to convince her that magic isn't real and yet, at the same time, insinuates that he'll use it against her to beat her. After she blows up his computer with her fake magic, he seeks out a way to create his own, real magic power. Of course, to him, his real magic is actually just science, which leads him to having "white science" powers.
His accent has been described as "ridiculous," and it's been explained that he pronounces his v's ("vv") with a "w" sound.
He also sometimes uses nautical puns when he talks. Just because.
ARCANARUM SPECIFICS:
Story: The Princess Bride (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_princess_bride)
Story Character: Westley (AKA the Dread Pirate Roberts)
Plans: Inheriting Westley's... well, everything, will have disastrously hilarious effects on Eridan. His desperateness will be slowly whittled away by Westley's sincerest forms of cockiness; he might, if he's lucky, actually develop some sense of selflessness too. He'll be compelled to do what his crushes ask of him (a la the "as you wish" syndrome which I imagine will get hilariously out of hand here), and he will grow even more fond of the idea of life on the sea, a la the Dread Pirate Roberts. It fits in really well because, as it stands, Eridan fancies himself a pretty fierce pirate already - his denizen will, however, help make him less a bloodthirsty killer and more of an honest, fairytale pirate. Also, as an added bonus, pretty much immediately, he's not going to be hurt by the sun, which on his home planet is lethal to trolls.
