The weekend

Glorious weather this weekend.

Friday I headed home from work instead of picking up DS2, got out the bike, put on the kid seat, picked DS2 up on the bike and headed out for a little ride. Just 8ish miles on the local bike path, but it felt good. Well, except for the .1 mile (in each direction) of chipped wood the path was detoured over because of some work on a nearby catch basin. I like biking with the seat much better than pulling the trailer.

Saturday I had wanted to get out for a hike or canoeing or biking, but DS2 didn't sleep well that night and so there was a lot of sleeping in and tiredness to go around. And we realized that DS1 has outgrown all his outdoors stuff. Need a new life jacket for canoeing and he's too big for the bike trailer (and I don't like pulling it). So we stayed home, but spent most of it outside. I got a lot of yard work done.

In the evening, DS2 wanted to help me with something and I gave him a choice of floors: the laundry room floor where the floor had been finished everywhere except in the spot there used to be a large chest freezer and under the washer and dryer or the landing for the stairs which has cracked marble tile that I want to replace with strip oak to match the stairs that I've redone. He chose the laundry room. We got through the chest freezer area. It's kind of nice working with him these days. He's competant enough that he can actually help some and patient enough to wait through the parts he can't help with. And he picked up on the somewhat subtle pattern that the vinyl tiles were laid in very quickly.

Sunday astra and DS1 spent much of the day out between getting together with his class to make a video for his teachers and going to see 'Curious George'. DS2 and I went out in search of stuff. Got one of those third wheel bike attachments so DS1 can go biking with us. Looked for a new life jacket. Couldn't find any Type II jackets. Guess we'll have to settle for a Type III for him. Teaching him to swim this summer will be high on the list. Also was looking for a small canoe paddle for DS2. DS1 has one and it will make things so much easier for them to each have their own, but I struck out on that one.

Also started work on the landing. Well, really just got as far as pulling up the old tile and figuring out what pattern we're putting in (my dad gave us a pile of small pieces of strip oak and maple and I thought I'd do something clever with it. Also started cleaning up the under the washer and dryer part of the laundry room floor, but that didn't happen until late becuase the w&d were in use most of the day.

All in all a very nice weekend, though it really would have been nice to be out on a trail or lake on Saturday.
