During my Birthday week I got to see a number of movies with my parents.
Here are my quick reviews:
"9" - This movie was gorgeous to look at, but it has a lot going wrong as a movie. The main problem is the story really just falls apart at the end of the film. There's no explanation why certain events happen or what they signify. The movie also has a huge failing in the fact that it is only seventy-something minutes long... it could have put in a few extra minutes to explain why certain things were the way they were. As much as I admired the world and the voice acting, I can only give "9" a C+
"500 Days of Summer" - This movie was fantastic. It was a well handled comedy telling of the 500 days that our main character was involved with a girl named Summer. The movie jumps back and forth on a little slider letting us know what day we're seeing within the relationship... and while the story is amusing and witty... there's a lot of nice details in the secondary characters... especially the main character's sister. I also want to point out that the movie took a nice turn by making the main character's boss a nice guy and not a stereotypical asshole. This is one of the better relationship movies I've seen... I give it a solid A and urge that you all see it.
"The September Issue" - I have no interest in the world of fashion, but this documentary about the inner workings of Vogue magazine... and the construction of their all-important September Issue (which was like 840 pages!!) was truly fascinating. I'm glad I had the chance to see it, but I probably wouldn't have seen it if my parents hadn't wanted to go. It was insightful and really focused more on people and what they do then being an expose on the fashion industry. If you like documentaries or if you like learning about places that would otherwise be alien to you... I think you'll appreciate seeing this movie.
"The Informant" - Wow. Matt Damon is simply amazing in this wonderfully dark comedy. There were some surprising faces in the film as well, including the Smothers Brothers, Patton Oswalt, and Scott Bakula. I had the good fortune of seeing it with a large crowd and we were all just laughing and laughing. This movie was intelligent, clever and well shot. Again, I must point out that the movie hinged on the brilliance of Matt Damon's acting. You owe it to yourself to see this film. Another A.
