Scare Tactics

Dang! No sooner do I drop the long-standing nihilist/hellraiser bit, become a parent and see at last the beauty and worth of all life when the tv news tells me the Cold War's on again and nuclear conflagration may yet be our dark destiny. Huh. Not that all the terrible weapons magically vanished with the coming of glasnost but in recent years the ( Read more... )

Ch 4 is govt-owned? How so, sir? (I'd research this startling assertion meself but as you know, so little time these days!)
So the Idler was more or less run by the Man, eh? Hm. Wheels within wheels. You ever get the feeling that the only dissent which exists is that which They permit to exist? That everything is controlled and our masters know exactly what's going on at all times (though every single dealing I've had with Glasgow City Council would strongly suggest otherwise? Ostensible political enemies conspire to keep us passive, the CIA brought down the Twin Towers and your REAL dad is John Major.
Dig what the anarchists say: if voting changed anything, they'd ban it. Seriuosly, though. It seems the belly of the beast is the only place to be. Funny how the few groups outside mainstream's society's clutches get such a hard time. 'New Age travellers' were hounded almost out of existence thru the 80s and 90s, and Travellers (Roma, Gyppos, Knackers, Pikeys) are now the only minority everyone can still openly discriminate against. (How the hell did I get onto this? Bear with me) Yesterday I saw a bit of a 'well-off middle-class couple buy and do up their dream home' - type tv show by accident. The couple blew the last of their budget on an adjacent field - a sound move, reckoned the presenter, in case it got developed and became a building site or in case "passing travellers liked the look of it". Couldn't fucking believe it. Yer basic 'No Dogs, No Blacks, No Irish' attitude on an early evening property show.
Well. Glad I got that off my chest.
