so, my inbox stopped working this morning, and i use imap not pop3 so it can be constantly sync'd between mac and iphone.
this morning ... no inbox.
turns out i had an outstanding renewal payment, which heartinternet (my provider) had sent to an old account, but not to the account the inbox serves (this provider hooks one account to one domain name, and when i got through to customer services they could see all this, and it should be obvious where to send renewal emails to).
long story short (to get to the painful bit) i paid straight away and no email. contact customer services who tell me to click the various things to get to the bit where a new box is built and attached to the account. there's a throw away line at the bottom that says that the old mailbox doesn't exist anymore. what the fucking fuck? 2500 messages gone, just like that.
so, good bye heart internet and back to easily.co.uk where i have all the family's email accounts hosted.
and thankyou apple and time-machine. i clicked the buttons and got the messages back - and thankyou netgear and your raid5 NAS with all the disks in.
so no drama apart from all the huge aggro. and it's worth £11 to be free of that shitty ISP.
