Asiade from Funky Formal, where I had a good time (and by judicious use of my experience and knowledge, did not have a hangover)--a good week,  One of two rennies (me and "Judith Cook"--cook for the reenactor village) interviewed in two local radio stations Thursday.  (see below ( Read more... )

Yes. Book is set in early years of the plague in Europe (so fits my stock). Protagonists find out the plague is symptom of the war between heaven and hell., It's a horror story. Haven't read it, but it did sell well.

And confirmed my plan--next year gonna have a shelf/display of books about faires (including that new one there are 3), including fiction (some of which is dubious, but at least not wholly wrong), and also books (regardless of subject) by rennies--so I have an excuse to stock Marrus' Lightsurfing (among others).

Well hopefully the new location will work out as well as you'd like it to.
It's always a shame to lose a show, but more so this one since there's nothing else going on this time of year. Sure makes for a short off season for some folks, and that's rarely a bad thing what with a rennie's average income.

Let me know if you have any copies of Chris's new book left come Bristol. I'd rather buy one off you than Amazon.

Guaranteed--will have Road Dog Diary, Renaissance Faires: Merrying the Past, Well Met and at least Between Two Fires. It's apparently out of print, but Andre Norton's edited Renaissance Faire (collection of mostly fantasy short stories) gets the spirit right in several of the stories ( ... )

Yeah. It's the same with any "outsider" group and someone wanting to tell their story. Problem is, without careful training in recognizing your biases, you're going to tell *your* story set in their world. Even anthropologists fail more often than not in this department.

Yeah--when I was at Boys Town Center, worked with all manner of social scientists. One issue they have is that the outsider observer either remains outside and thus misses stuff, gets stuff wrong, etc. or really does become an insider, and then unconsciously censors some things and spins others to protect the group.

What we need is more verbally agile insiders to write their own articles/books/websites--broad hint there.

Yeah, yeah. It's knowing how to start that's the problem.

Good idea--I hadn't got along far enough to even consider stories in anthologies. Need to get packing. Will message you later,k when I am back in WiFi land and more or less stable.

Just doing my last message check before disconnecting--now that things are drying out time to pack the booth.
