last saturday, there was a military funeral for "Coty" West, a 23 year old who had just gotten to iraq a month before. The day before, there were three men holding American flags outside of Berea Baptist, where the funeral was held, which is on the same block as my apartment building. At the time I had no idea why, and didn't think much more about it. The next day I walk to work, work my party, and catch a ride home. Note both times I pass the bapist church I didn't see hardly anyone out of the ordinary. I'ts not until later that night that I find out what the signifigance of the men holding falgs was:
The god hates fags people were coming to protest Coty West's funeral (who, to the best of my knowldege was not a homosexual) on the grounds that we are losing the war in Iraq because of America's acceptance of the gay lifestyle. The men with flags were there with the VFW, to guard the door to keep these guys out. From what I understand, the God hates fags protest was met with a large, local counter-protest as well as a counter protest from the Berea College students.
I feel werid for not knowing anything about it until way after. Comments? well, it was good to know the community and the college kinda come together on somehting, although I think both groups had very different reasons. Also, these God hates fags people seem to be going for stupid in a big way "Um, you know all that bad shit that happens? That's because of lifestyles I'm uncomfortable with." Apparently they're doing this all over the country. Also, it kind of bothers me to think had this not been a military thing, and instead a protest of a gay funeral, that it would have happened very differnetly. It may very well have been the college vs. the town. But then agian, who knows?
