regroup - re-energize - rewind... redeployed in the southeastern front

some goals knocked off:
- new book from chapters. its the 4th book in the 'song of ice and fire' series by George R R Martin. I didn't know that's what the series was called until about 2 books in. Read the first book and see if you're not addicted. Its called "A Game of Thrones". It's got the unique chapter style where every chapter is titled and from the perspective of the inner monologue from one of the main characters. Fortuneately, the characters fall on all sides of the emerging conflicts and you get to 'see' some of it firsthand and other things by that world's 'grapevine'.

I just gave Metal-Cam some of his books back, "What If?" and "When Will Jesus Bring The Porkchops" by George Carlin.

"What If?" is a phenominal read for anyone interested in history, culture and society. Or if you have a morbid facination with how vastly different our current way of life could be if a few things had gone differently. It goes from ancient to modern, and there's a sequel i might buy if Cam is too slow in getting it.

The George Carlin book was funny, and he takes an insightful look at the kinds of language we use, and how it compares to language we used to use and the general trend to gradually 'soften' the words used to describe things that might otherwise sound unpleasant. Although, I did find it hard to read for more than a few chapters at a time. I think a book-on-tape is in order.

I'm currently reading another of M-Cam's books, about all the ins and outs surrounding the roman/germanic battle of teutoburg forest. Its an early example of what we might consider guerilla tactics today, against a larger, more rigidly organized, and well equipped invasion force. Its also a bloody-nose in the otherwise celebrated (by romans) career of Augustus aka Octavian, the 'diefied son of Julius Caesar' (i believe his sister's grandkid... so an adopted son). Augustus has his own month named after him, which i happen to be born in. You get one guess which one.

next up: some military and political history books. any battles, conflicts, or figures that someone would like to suggest to me? Right now i'm leaning in the direction of WW1, and i'm having trouble deciding where to start. i'm thinking mostly europe and asia in the last few hundred years.

- I'm going to go fix up a used bass ian ford has graciously left for whoever wants to spend to the money to fix it... i'm planning to make that person me! Then all i need is an amp, and loosely structured practice scheduele and routine and i'll be on my way. hopefully around the end of the week. Someday, the bass will have its voice heard.

- Sports have taken an abrupt halt with the onset of winter. I've considered buying a used pair of skates, so i can stay active in the winter. Its too late for indoor soccer, but a possibility for next winter with skating. Dancing lessons might also be a possiblity, and it seems like a good option to pursue in winter possibly of next year. Video Games might not belong here in the sports section, but it depends on if you consider chess or poker a sport. You could also say the same about bowling, golf or baseball i guess, but I happen to believe that they all do. As it stands, a brand spanking new tower (and UPGRADABLE) for $500 and an internet connection will do me nicely so i can play with some degree of competency online, where most of the competition is.

Do you hear me Korea? I'm coming for you!

Spring/Summer/Fall are all pretty much taken care of except for a new hockey stick (thanks for letting me use yours dan), soccer ball (thanks calvin), baseball glove and running shoes. These New Balance shoes have held me up pretty well. I'll never forget how light they felt compared to my "big ugly boots" with the big steel toes. I was doing heel-clicks all day that day. Heh, when i bought them i wanted all black shoes, but they only hand black+white ones in my size that day. So i made some comment about them being mixed like me that got a laugh. They also got me through my first summer playing soccer since about grade 9 when i played at OT, or maybe a few years after in the OSC leagues.

Basically replace all the old sporting goods i've used over the years with stuff that actually fits me now, and now that i'm unlikely to outgrow it this time.

I now have soccer cleats (thanks Victoria), and one way or another i plan to play alot this summer. All in all, i plan to slowly find a way to reintroduce myself to the sports i used to enjoy playing from highschool and before. Likely starting with Soccer. I'll add absolutely anything to that list though, from ping pong, to pool, anything i remembered to put in my interests section and beyond.

hmmm, maybe that's a good reason to quit smoking again.

I'd have to see, but i think i might be interested in picking up the Novel based on chinese hisotry, Romance of the Three Kingdoms. I've played a few of their games and now i'm curious about the details of some of the characters. I find that happens alot now that i think about it. Playing video games based on real-world history, generates a strong desire to learn more about the worlds, cultures, and conflicts of the particular period.

A top-of-my-head list might be: '12 Tasks of Hercules' on the 5-and-1/4 floppy disks on the Apple IIe - which got me really into ancient greek mythology and history during its early period. Quite a treat back when i was in elementary school.

Geographical knowledge and details, Names of cities, Wonders of the World required to succeed in the 'Civilization' games, but originating in the classic 'Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego' and its various spinoffs.

Factions, Leaders, families, clans, and generals in all three of the 'TOTAL WAR' games (Japan, Medieval, Rome) and the 'Age of Empries' game and its sequels.

- i think they like me at the factory, cause they keep calling me in. I had the chance on friday to put CDs on near the machines i was work at in the factory. I started off with some Jojeto and Stevie Ray Vaughn, and thought long and hard about bringing in Sweatshop Union. about 2 songs into 'Natural Progression' i was switched to "counting light-bulbs" so i stopped it, but i doubt the two are related with that much noise to contend with.

- I got facebooked by a friend of mine whom i haven't seen or heard from in YEARS, and now have a link back to a part of my past at various stages of my life in Toronto that i just assumed died for the forseeable future around the same time ICQ did. That being said, i still remembered to call you on your birthday, there Adam aka 'beanie'. And i have evidence of us playing soccer together at about age 4 or 5 in the form of a home video.

A genuine thanks to facebook, and a 'holy shit, how the hell are ya' to Steph Vukov and anyone else who remembers me as Oakville Ben (or OBi-wan).

Ahh... the beaches. now that i like jazz, i don't live there anymore. It probably wasn't safe then either, but i got to swim in lake ontario!

... down by the boardwalk, where my first attempt to ride a bike ended in bushes and trees. He-Man, Transformers and GI Joe were the order of the day. Soccer, Tag, Baseball, Duplo Lego, and i even got to experience a small part of "The Legend of Zelda".
