[For Dean]

Feb 15, 2009 14:17

The first thing that had come to Sam Winchester's mind when he saw the cupcakes was that there was a lot of them. The second thing had been that Dean would probably salivate over them. He had a full plate of them. Chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, then some jelly in some, candy on others, and they were all ridiculously cupcakes ( Read more... )

"Man, if I had a nickel for every time I heard that," said Dean, chuckling as he opened the door to the hut. "But unlike the rest of them," he added, eying the cupcakes, "you actually have sugar. Come in, you magnificent bastard."

Sam gave a snort of amusement, handing over one of the jellied and candy cupcakes, settling into the hut, covering the plate with his body as a shield. "But dude, seriously, if you eat them at once, I am so not responsible for the stomachache."

Dean studied the cupcakes, mind pitching back to Halloween and the glorious smorgasbord he'd fit first into his pumpkin pouch, and then inside his stomach. The pain after had been incredible, but...Dean's mouth spread slowly into a grin. Totally worth it.

He looked at the cupcake already in his hand, then pushed half of it into his mouth. "Man," he said, spraying crumbs. "Did you make these?"

"More like went to get a meal at the kitchen and found that apparently, health is off the menu today," Sam informed Dean, circling the room while throwing a bemused look over his shoulder. "I swear to god, it's like there's nothing but candy and cupcakes and chocolates in there. And no, I didn't get you a heart-box of chocolate. That'd be just...way weird, dude."

Even if a couple years back, Island Chocolate had made things more than weird enough for them.

"Agreed," Dean managed around the other half of the cupcake. "Well," he said once he'd swallowed, "thanks for bringing the party to me, man."

Dean had been shut up in the hut for most of the day, alternating between wondering if what he had planned for Angua was too over the top, and actively hyperventilating over it. He'd have hated to miss out on all this sugar.

"You got plans with Jess?"

"I figure we'll do something," Sam said, nerves fraying in his voice and quite obviously on display. "I mean, I mean, it's weird, right? It's our first Valentine's Day in three years, except it's not. It's uninterrupted for her and for me, it's been three years of...well, really, really fucked up stuff."

He picked up a cupcake, tilting it back and forth idly, glancing warily at Dean over the frosting. "Should I go all out or something?"

"She seems pretty down to earth," said Dean, doing his best to focus on Sam and not the cupcake in his hand. "I bet she'd be happy with anything."

Thoughts of his own plans rose to Dean's mind unbidden, and he turned a little pink, eyes flicking to the tape player he'd stolen and back. Oh well, he still had several hours to back down. "I'm gonna take Angua out."

"Please don't finish that sentence with 'to the strip club'," Sam pleaded, because he had a lot of faith in his brother, he did, but the Island wasn't exactly putting forth a whole lot of romantic options in the way of restaurants. "You really like her, don't you," he said, lips curving up as a grin stole its way across his face. "Do you love her, Dean?"

Dean's eyes narrowed. He sat back a little, wondering if he was about to receive the same heckling he'd gotten after Sam met Cassie. "I'm only admitting it if you stop looking at me like that," he said, leaning forward to snake another cupcake. He poked some of the frosting into his mouth with his finger. "Yeah. I love her."

Sam took a long moment to let that sink in, staring at his brother and trying to process this change in their lives. They were going from the family business into this. And Sam felt like maybe they deserved it. "Does she know?" was the next logical question.

Dean's cheeks grew hot. Mentally he made a note to see about installing a fan in case of future heart to hearts. "She knows," he said. "It sorta...popped out of my mouth around Christmastime." He took a bite and swallowed. "She's pretty great."

"She is," Sam agreed warmly, having had this conversation with Angua a long, long time ago. He was mostly glad that he'd been right when it came to his instincts about Dean. "I mean, it definitely beats out all the one-night stands, right?"

"Not that you would know, choirboy," said Dean, pointing his cupcake at Sam. It wasn't fair - being the wise one was Dean's right by virtue of being first born, but it never seemed to work out that way.

"But yes. One awesome woman beats a bunch of one night stands."

"I guess we Winchesters have a type, huh," Sam managed to crack, pressing his lips together to avoid grinning too much at the whole 'sleeping with werewolves' bit. "I mean, besides the hot blonde women who could kick our ass, part."

"Oh, let's not go there," Dean groaned, passing a hand over his eyes. It hadn't escaped his attention that both women sort of resembled their mother, tall with long blonde hair, but Dean would choke himself on a cupcake before he brought that up.

Better to focus on the ass kicking part. "Angua's got a mean right hook, I'll give her that," he said, rubbing the ghost of a bruise from his jaw. "Fiesty."

"You know?" Sam couldn't help asking. "I've been teaching Jess to spar, but, I mean. Things get distracting?" he offered, knowing he probably didn't have to elaborate much more before Dean got the message.
