It was another one of their tricks. Just something to lull them all into compliance, before some new horror sprang up on them. They couldn't become comfortable. They had to stay wary, and make sure they weren't blindsided again.
But... damn it, it was hard, when
the animal just wouldn't leave. And when she--there was no way this was a male--talked to him with the frankness only the Commander had ever used... How was he supposed to guard against that? Even now, as he moved cautiously through the hall, the animal was at his side, never more than a few paces ahead or behind, and pausing often to push her large head against his hand. More than he felt he deserved after that whole... mirror incident.
She didn't even leave when they stepped out into the garden. If anything, she stuck closer, growling at the plant and its surrounding guards until he put a restraining hand on her.
"Bastards," she informed him, so bluntly he stared. She glanced up at him, head cocked. "They broke your arm. No one does that."
"Could you... stop impersonating a naval officer for a minute?" he asked, somewhat dryly. "We're having a serious meeting here..."
With Allen. Almost immediately, the animal was with him again, on her hind legs, front paws on his chest. No mean feet, given his height. Absently, he patted her, trying to not tense up before the boy arrived.
