"Well--it is rather a long story," Germany said, unaccountably blushing as he moved to place his tray--the one holding the creamer and sugar and two tea cups--on the table near Fraulein von Karma. He did not want to have to re-hash a lot of history, especially given how bloody most of it had been--and how often he and Prussia, in one form or another, had been in the thick of it. He turned politely to relieve HerrSasagawa of his tray, murmuring his thanks for the assistance. Then, careful not to disturb the President's paperwork, Ludwig set out the cups as he talked, putting them by habit in neat little rows according to type: Kaffee here, tea there, sugar packets in a neat little pile, and the little cuplets of creamer in the centre.

"I will spare you the worst of the details for brevity's sake, as they do not pertain to the current situation--though, gnädiges Fräulein, I can certainly furnish those details later if you feel they are required. Suffice to say that many years ago on Earth, when humankind began to civilize and formed the concept of Nations--the eldest of us were born. We sometimes refer to them as Grandfathers, when they have produced many offspring--Grandfather Rome, Germania, and so on. There was also Egypt, Greece.... and as time went by, history marched onward--borders changed, other younger nations were born and gained identity as their people formed at attachment for a place and culture, I suppose you might say."

He finished arranging everything to his satisfaction, gave a little huff of approval, and assumed a parade rest stance with his hands clasped loosely behind him.

"We have always been there. Only the youngest of us remember our origins--and sometimes, that not clearly. But some things have always been constants--and here I must ask you all not to let any of this information go beyond this room, as it could have dire consequences should it become generally known."

One by one he speared each of them with a sharp look, holding their gazes for a long moment. "Herr President, you I have chosen to trust because of the way you spoke about the rights of Nations and the precedents set by the decisions being made by the Ennis woman and the creature known as Vakarian," he told Rufus quietly. "You spoke the truth as a Boss would--a leader--and you sounded as if you meant it. And so I trust you."

Germany looked next at Sasagawa Ryohei. "We have only just met, sir, but I have read the recent things you have posted on the forums--I know that you comprehend the need to sometimes make a difficult decision and stand by your deeds. That might make me choose to befriend you, if it were possible, outside of this situation--but this lady here trusts you, and that is good enough for me. If I am recalling your postings correctly, it may well be you can shed some light here as well on things I only partly understand."

Germany looked lastly at Fraulein von Karma; his eyes took on a glint of something more, not softer really, but perhaps more focused. If he were able to communicate anything of himself as a Nation to anyone, it had to be her--one of his children, German by birth and blood. As if he was hoping for some kind of sign, he raised his chin a bit and narrowed his eyes.

"You, Fraulein, are--as far as I can tell from the Forums--the only lawyer here in this prison--but that is not why I have asked for your counsel. You are German, thus one of my children, and that may have had an effect on the decision, all jest aside--but it was not the only reason. You have spoken to these people about the rule of law, the importance of order out of chaos, of making decisions and standing by them--and you show a passion for the truth. You also show a passion for your homeland--which as you can imagine means a lot to me. A passion for home may make a massive difference in understanding what sort of brink we are at."

He held her gaze a moment longer, then took a shallow breath and let it out slowly. "Do I have your word this discussion will therefore go no further? For if we cannot agree there, we cannot in all honesty proceed."
