Uncanny·X·Men 3:09 PM 1/27/09 · On my way out the door today I swung by Blockbuster and picked up on of the 1st copies of Hulk vs. I'll be watching it in just a little bit...though I am a little disappointed by the length of the two films on the DVD.
They're about the average length of a typical cartoon.
...Thor: Takes a rather unusual, possibly unique, spin on the Norse legends. Claims that each winter Odin goes into his Odin Sleep and that's when all the forces of evil, in the 9 worlds, assault Asgard, as though they leave it alone the rest of the year. The Asgardians fight them back each time, largely due to Thor, and the whole thing starts again the next year come winter. On the final day this particular time, Loki and the Enchantress kidnap Bruce Banner to use the Hulk to do what all the forces of evil cannot. They mystically separate Hulk and Banner and put Loki in the driver's seat via a sort of mystical Wii setup...
...not exactly but close enough.
Really weird hearing the Hulk with Loki's voice.
...Wolverine: When you wake up in a crater and every part of you hurts, you might wonder what the Hell just happened to you. Wolverine gets his answer pretty damned quick and it's a quick flashback to fill in the blanks before he gets the Holy Hell smashed out of him...
...and that's before the Weapon X program inserts itself into the situation.
Best damned fight Marvel's ever taken from the page and put onto any kind of screen!
Obviously any kind of comic to screen thing is AU (alternate universe) but if you're geeky enough, and I am, you can still put some kind of spin as to a when. Unfortunately, there's some canon chronological issues at work here even with that.
The order of the two is I suspect an alphabetical choice but details within suggest a different order. Both from story content and character physical traits, most notably Hulk's hair, I'd say Wolverine takes place before Thor. That and Thor actually knows who the Hulk is ½ the time and Wolverine's never heard of him and Department H, this is before our fave lil' canucklehead joined the X·Men, has only gotten scattered reports. So far as that goes it all plays out about right...
...excepting Wolverine's mask is a variation of his original and the one he wears now. Those...black things (is there an actual word for them?) are much too long for the mask he wore when he first faced the Hulk in the comics.
Wolverine is much bloodier than Thor, which is interesting given that it being in Asgard the weapons of choice are generally swords and spears and assorted other sharp objects. My guess, Asgardian steel is no match for Adamantium blades; any damage the Norse Gods did healed too quick for any significant blood loss.
So far as it goes, the battles in Asgard are amazing as it's the Hulk vs everybody. Initially under the control of Loki, who did an okay enough job, until Hulk broke free of that control and did even greater damage.
Nobody does Hulk as well as Hulk...
...although I bet the voice actor (Fred Tatasciore) that did Big Green's voice is knocking back lemonades like they're going out of style!
Without Banner inside we're talking a completely mindless Hulk with nothing to govern his rage. Think either the time (from the comics) Doctor Strange banished him to The Crossroads or when Doc Samson physically removed Bruce from the Hulk and the big guy got free.
Only significant issue I had with Thor was Volstagg of the Warriors Three. His voice was much too high pitched for my tastes. Always figured with that much belly he'd be more deeply resonant, kind of a baritone sorta deal.
I had more issues with Wolverine but only for continuity sakes, very canon type stuffs. While it has the best replay of how Logan got the adamantium I've seen outside of the comics, things go a bit wonky from there. The original Weapon X team in this consists of Deadpool, Sabretooth, Lady Deathstrike, and Omega Red...which is wrong enough in itself. This also puts that at some point during the remote controlled period of Wolverine's life, he fought side by side with them...interestingly enough wearing a mask more in keeping with his first one in the comics.
Behavior wise is a mixed bag. I've never much cared for Omega Red but he was more or less as he should've been, if a tad too somber. Deadpool was hands down perfect! Lady Deathstrike was a little surreal and seemed almost to be orgasming everytime she stabbed Wolverine. Sabretooth was, if you'll forgive me, pathetic.
Hulk was perfect in Wolverine. Classic savage Hulk, including calling Wolvie "Little Man" and his other trademark lines. Wolverine was also perfect, as was Thor in his own feature.
For some reason in Wolverine, Hulk's legs look oddly short.
X·23 has 2 brief cameos.
These are both worth seeing...but if you had to choose between the 2 of them I'd say the Wolverine one is the better of the 2 options. Also, unlike Thor, stick around to the end of the credits of Wolverine because what is there is beautiful!
