Christine E. Looser and Thalia Wheatley (2010) The Tipping Point of Animacy
How, When, and Where We Perceive Life in a Face
Psychological Science November 2010 , first published on November 19, 2010 doi:10.1177/0956797610388044

Really excited about this: a new paper (and one by another PhD student, no less!) about the sweet spot where someone stops seeing an artificial face as an object, and starts seeing it as a person: and the role that focussing on eyes rather than other facial features have in this tipping point.

It's beautiful timing too, as I'm working on a research proposal looking in more detail at the qualities that make 'uncanny' and non-human faces different, compared to artificial and human faces. I've been feeling a little flat about my research for a while now, so it's really great to wake up feeling excited about the project again.

There's a good write up here and my favourite of their morph videos is here - well worth a look for the smoothness of the morph alone. And can I just say - super work, Christine!
