Nah, I don't consider that a backhanded compliment. My characters are in a lot of pain right now, and if I'm writing it well then I'm doing my job.

Poor Buffy. It's so easy for people to sympathize with Spike because, in a lot of ways, he has been a victim in this story. But that doesn't make Buffy a villain. She's not perfect and she's made a lot of mistakes, but so has he. And if readers are willing to forgive Spike for murder and torture, I think that Buffy also deserves some understanding. God knows, I've been in her position financially, and it would be incredibly tempting to allow someone else to just come along and shoulder the burden. It was wrong of her to let him do it, but at the same time it was a reaction that a lot of people would probably have had. Human beings aren't perfect. I'm glad you're able to feel empathy toward her because a lot of people don't. It was starting to worry me; I don't want to make readers dislike her.

I have to admit ... I'm proud of this plot twist. I think I managed to keep it pretty well under wraps, because a lot of reviewers seemed shocked by Spike's going to Angel. If I can just keep you from guessing the rest, I can finish this fic a happy girl.

Thanks so much for the comment! ((hugs))
