Erasing the Lines... ala Mabry

Jun 25, 2008 19:37

Today, Jeff and I took Mabry and Peyton around with us as we shot the Erasing the Lines kids at their various project sites. Mabry had a blast.

Here's Mabry with Margaret Ellen at The Gate (local youth center). They're working on a design for inspiriational wall art to hang inside the common area. Some of the ones we saw that had already been completed said things like, "Believe" and "Self-Control"... and had brightly colored designs around the wording. They're trying to make the atmosphere something fun, instead of the institutional walls that are there now.

Here's Mabry with Becky at "the Tree". This is where a lot of old black men hang out and play checkers and stuff. It's also where a lot of people litter. So one group of kids spend the afternoon making the area clean enough to enjoy. Mabry decided she would run around and point out all of the trash to Becky and Hayley. Note the disco ball flip flips. She goes no where without them now.

Here's Mabry talking to someone at the Boys and Girls club at an old school. This room was utter CHAOS! Jeff and I spend about 15 minutes there shooting, and when I left I felt like I had been there three hours! God bless the teens who were serving. We're talking out of CONTROL! It was cute, though... one table had three or four teenage white girl volunteers getting their hair done by three or four 7 to 9 year old black girls... braids and pom-poms abounded. SO great.

I'll post pictures from the actual camp once we're through with the coverage.
