Name: Shang Xiang Sun
Canon Origin/Series: Dynasty Warriors (
Her page on the Koei wiki)
School Year: 5th
Gender: Female
Age: 15
Out of school living location: Belfast, Northern Ireland
Blood status: Pureblood
Personality: Shang Xiang is, first and foremost, a headstrong and determined young woman, with stubbornness to match. She refuses to be told no, when she sets her mind to something, it'll happen, no matter who objects. Always willing to speak her mind, no matter what she consequences, and eager to be heard, she definitely fits the description of "annoying little sister."
Labeled as a tomboy from a young age, Shang always considers herself to be one of the boys. As a 3rd-century Chinese princess, it always came with a sort of stigma attached, but she doesn't care. She knows she can do anything a man can do, better, and if you disagree, you must not be spending enough time around her. When she is ignored or overlooked, she forces her way into the conversation. She hates the idea of becoming a housewife, and instead wishes to lead and excel and make a difference, just like her brothers.
Shang comes from a sheltered upbringing, but the good thing is that she knows that. She is well aware that there are many things that she hasn't seen and doesn't know, but she is eager to change that. She'll take any excuse to get away and see the world, even if it means marching an army down there and conquering it. She thirsts for adventure and is eager to explore, her usually cheerful demeanor magnifying whenever there is something new and exciting to be involved in.
Despite her rough and tumble nature, Shang is very much a romantic. She believes that love is stronger than anything, and as long as you have it, everything else will be fine. She is very affectionate toward her loved ones, and even admires her older brothers for their achievements. However, she does not idolize them so much that she can't tell them when they're wrong, which she will be very quick to do when she disagrees. Shang is also fierce in her loyalty to them, but she sometimes spreads her loyalty too thin, thanks to her curious and outgoing nature. Being friends with everyone means that at some point, you have to take sides, and she finds decisions where other parties are involved to be extremely difficult.
Usually, she carries with her a calm, can-do attitude, but when it comes to friends and family, Shang worries a lot. It's justified, considering that they are engaged in a constant state of war throughout most of their lives, but even so, she spends a lot of time hovering over them, offering suggestions, or forcing her help upon them. Partly because helping would prove her worth. But, you know. Still worrying.
Canon Background: Sun Shang Xiang was born into a family with a long military tradition, tracing all the way back to famed military strategist Sun Tzu. Despite being a girl, and the youngest of Sun Jian's three children, she was taught to fight, both with martial arts, and a variety of weapons. Her father was one of the many warlords trying to unify China under their own rule after the downfall of the Han Dynasty.
Coming from an old pureblood family, Shang is ignorant about muggles, even by wizarding standards. She developed a love for Quidditch early, after her brother Ce taught her how to fly one summer while he was still in Hogwarts. This, combined with the two's shared adventurous spirit, make them a lot closer than Shang and Quan were, even though they were slightly closer in age.
Her father and brothers, Sun Ce and Sun Quan, deny her request to participate in the Allied Forces' war against the tyrant Dong Zhou. Despite the success of the campaign, Shang is both furious about being overlooked, and worried about her family. When they return, she makes clear her refusal to be left out any longer by defeating both of her brothers in a duel. Impressed by her determination, her father grants her a force of her own when the Sun family rides into the Battle of Jing Provence. The battle is won, but the victory turns bittersweet when Shang's father is killed by an ambush party of archers in the midst of battle. Her oldest brother Ce takes over command of the territory and its army, and, aware of plots to take advantage of the instability brought on by the change in leadership, the siblings go to the leader of the kingdom of Shu, Liu Bei, to propose an alliance. Shang spends the meeting criticizing his military tactics and belittling his intelligence, but despite her protests, the alliance goes as planned.
Their new ally's loyalty falters, causing Ce to die in battle. Quan takes over where he left off, and becomes the first emperor of Wu. Desperate to restrengthen his alliance with Liu Bei, he arranges for Shang to marry him. Although she has no desire to settle down and become a housewife, Shang does what he says, fearing the loss of another loved one. Despite her wariness, she learns to love her new husband, and goes into battle by his side during many key campaigns. Their relationship slowly grows into one of mutual love and respect, and he puts enough confidence in her abilities to follow her tactical advice, resulting in more land and power for the kingdom of Shu. Even after her brother insists that the marriage has served its purpose and she should come back to Wu, she decides to stay, declaring her love for both Liu Bei and her new found freedom.
After the two kingdoms band together to defeat a common enemy, they go their separate ways. China can't be truly unified unless it is under a single kingdom, and while Shang is able to keep the peace between Shu and Wu for a while, the death of Liu Bei's sworn brother by Sun Quan's men sends him into a revenge-fueled frenzy. Shang's husband declares war on her brother, and she is forced to choose between the two. She chooses her family over her love, and after escaping right under the noses of Shu's most esteemed generals, Shang and her team of female bodyguards return to Wu to fight alongside her brother at the Battle of Yi Ling. In the midst of battle, she encounters her husband, and deals the blow that kills him with tears in her eyes, holding the emperor in her arms as he dies.
Background (AU!Canon; HP): killer The Sun family resides in Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland. Head of the old and powerful pureblood family, her father is a high-ranking member of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. Her mother remained at home to care for their three children, of which Shang Xiang is the youngest. Since she was little, she preferred to go by the more masculine half of her name, "Shang".
Growing up and watching her brothers Ce and Quan, eight and six years older than her, respectively, succeed in everything that they did gave Shang a lot to live up to. Ce was a Quidditch star for the Gryffindor team, Quan made Head Boy as a Slytherin, and both were admitted into the Auror program. When Shang received her Hogwarts letter at age eleven (going on twelve!), she promised herself that she would do just as well as they did, if not better.
And succeed she did, taking an immediate interest in dueling, and devoting much of her free time into this new hobby. She excels particularly in Defense Against the Dark Arts, Herbology, and Care of Magical Creatures. Shang seems to be well on her way of acheiving her dreams of success, and with the magical war becoming more and more deadly, she is only more determined to do well. queen
How would your character fit in to each House?
Gryffindor: She has enough nerve for ten people. A female making a name for herself as a warrior in 3rd century China has got to have guts, and Shang's about as brave as they come. The stubborn attitude attributed to less-disciplined Gryffindors is hers, as well. She rushes into things as if she is invincible, without stopping to consider fear towards anyone or anything.
Hufflepuff: Loyalty is very important to Shang. She is the type of person who will stay by your side as long as she is physically able. Even when forced to choose between her brother and her husband, she manages to keep some loyalty to both, pledging to live a life worthy of the latter's memory. She is no stranger to hard work, either, often having to put forth twice the effort of her peers to achieve the same result. Shang goes to great lengths to be seen as an equal and be taken seriously, which requires a lot of determination.
Ravenclaw: Shang's unquenchable thirst for new knowledge and experiences is very Ravenclaw-esque. She is a fast learner, and she uses that strength to adapt quickly to any situation. She is very attentive, and tends to know what she's talking about, her advice being followed even by kings.
Slytherin: Becoming a general and assisting in the rule of not one kingdom, but two, is a pretty tall order, and it takes a lot of ambition to take those things from dreams to reality. She gets what she wants, evn if she has to start a war to get it. She even convinces Liu Bei to turn against former allies for their benefit, despite his initial concerns. However, this is less due to cunning or manipulation, and more due to telling people to do things repeatedly until they actually do them.
Sample Journal Entry: Summer's getting boring already. Is it time to go back to school yet? 5th year's supposed to get really busy, I bet there's all sorts of things to do!
Picnics don't count. When dad said we were all taking a trip to London, I thought it would be more like an adventure. Or a quest! Not a picnic. We could do that any time. It was nice to see my brothers, though, even if Ce wouldn't let me talk to his girlfriend. Like I would say something embarrassing. Like how he got sick in the kitchen sink the morning of his auror exam.
