So. I have this trend. And it isn't really a trendy trend, not in the cool sense at least. Or maybe its not a trend, its a tend(ancy). To lose/break/acquire new cell phones.
In 6 months I've had three different phones, in a year and a half I've had five. Why? Why? Why? I dooooon't know.
In Florida, I suppose it was late April, I gave up and finally bought myself a phone. At the time AT&T was giving out a free one with activation, so I said "heck yes" and took that right off their hands. And I loooved it. It was color, it was a Nokia, and it was much cheaper than long distance was costing me.
I moved home and became progressively more and more sick of this phone. It was big, pretty ugly, actually, and everyone else's phones were significantly cooler. My brother has a problem similar to mine (it might in fact be hereditary ... although he is my step brother) and he loves to BUY new phones. His old one was exponentially better than mine, so I jumped on the lemme-have-it bandwagon and gratefully took the old rubbish off his hands. With a new faceplate and a little TLC via Q-Tip cleaning, it looked brilliant. This phone, in fact, is the one seen below--doused in water and glorified through animation.
Around Christmas this last year Jordan and I were downtown doing some gift shopping and we stopped by the Smart Wireless store so I could ask about changing my plan to a Cingular plan. Since the beginning of time when I saw Homer Simpson advertising the Cingular name during the NBA Finals (yeaaars ago... like 2) I've wanted their service, complete with the small orange fellow and rollover minutes (I call it the I-want-things-that-look-cool-and-make-me-laugh plan). But, to make all my dreams come through, I had to buy a new phone. Its a trick, they play dirty dirty tricks (In truth any GSM phone will work with any service if it is unlocked, but they make you buy new ones and say the technology is different, LIES!). But I loooove tricks when they mean wasting money and getting fun electronics, so I bit and ended up with the Motorolla V551. My first, and hopefully last, flip phone.
This phone served me well. It took some getting used to, but I learned to love it, its Remy Zero alarm clock, and ::gasp:: even its flippability. But! This phone was clearly loved by many, as in no more than 6 months it was fo-jacked from winco. WINCO! I'm sure it was stolen. There really isn't any other explanation. Except that since I was wearing basketball shorts without pockets I may have left the phone on a shelf in the cereal isle while collecting boxes to store my stuff in. Of course I was unprepared and did not insure my phone, thus, I was required to purchase one at retail price ($250) and hate life. Yes, thats a requirement. I bought an incredible, fully loaded 2005 Nokia 6230. Definitely the best phone I've owned, maybe.
Sadly, this Eric/Nokia relationship was doomed from the start and we eventually fell out of love. Mostly just because the dang phone freezes allllll the time, and leaves me with no option but to remove the battery and, again, hate life. No worries, right? I was definitely smart enough to insure this one, and even better, its still covered by warranty! I made a quick call to Cingular and got my replacement order underway, only to be informed of one sad fact: The Nokia 6230 was no longer available for direct model replacement. OH Snap. I was given two options: a new Motorolla V551 or a Siemens S66. I tend to be a rather "mix it up" type of guy, but I was not really interested in either phone. I debated: Get a phone I was already satisfied with, learned to love in fact, which was torn from my clenched fingers in brutal theivery, OR, try something new, unproven, and possibly awful. If you know me, you know which I chose.
The Siemens has now arrived, and its weird, really. The keypad is half the size of my Nokia's, while the screen is probably twice the size of my Nokia's. Clearly the priorities of each manufacturer are ... polarized. Luckily, the new kid has a memory card, like Mr. Nokia, which still leaves room for Scrubs episodes and music videos! Wooot. Will this phone do the trick? Only time will tell, and I just got her today... so... only MORE time will tell, actually.
