Renee is sitting on the chair, reading a magazine when he comes in.

She gives him a small smile.

"Hi David."

Great. Rebecca's not home, but her mother is.

David wonders if his horoscope for today involved the word "awkward."

"Renee," he says, politely. No sense in antagonizing somebody's mom.

She nods and looks back down.

"And how are you?"

Fuck. Small talk.

"Can't complain," he says, and begins unpacking the window glass.

She nods again. Good, good.

"How was the movie?"

"There was no movie," David says. He's measuring lumber for the frame.

She looks up.

"Really."

"Not gonna say to you, in front of her, 'You walked in on us right as we were about to head to bed,'" David says, without a hint of embarrassment. "So I made some shit up about a movie, and we went back to my place."

"Kind of figured."

If she's upset, she's hiding it very well.

David nods. He'd figured she'd figured. Why lie?

He starts putting together the new frame for the window. If nothing else, Rebecca and Yoko are getting a better-looking window out of the deal; the wood looks and smells like fresh pine.

There's a lull in the "conversation" that lasts about five minutes.

"Sorry about that, by the way. Didn't know she..."

She gesticulates vaguely with a hand. You know, did that. Here.

"Way I understand it," David says, "the root of the problem's that you don't know much of anything about her."

Hm. He sands a part of the frame smooth.

Touches a bit of a sore spot, yeah, but the man was right. Can't fault him for speaking truth.

"Guess I don't."

That's going to lead to an uncomfortable lull in the conversation, but David doesn't see the need to fill it.

He continues fixing the window. It's something he can do on autopilot; it's getting done quickly.

She shakes her head.

"She doesn't share much with me."

As if that explains it. Wow, awkward.

David nods, as he fits a pane of glass into one of the frames.

"She had to die to get you to get in touch," he says. "Might resent that a little."
