Last time…
As they strapped Hyde onto the stretcher, Hyde opened one eye slightly as he held Tetsu’s hand.
“Te…tsu,” he gurgled.
“Yes, Hyde?” Tetsu said, leaning in to hear what was barely above a whisper.
“In case…I don’t…I can’t see your face anymore…” Hyde coughed up blood. “Tetsu, shiawase ni nare…”
Hyde’s eyes rolled into the back of his head as they strapped an oxygen mask to his face.
“Hyde…?” Tetsu said, suddenly feeling Hyde’s grasp go limp.
“Let’s go, people!” shouted the head paramedic, directing the traffic of stretchers and emergency staff. “Let’s move these two people out of here!”
“We’re gonna take him to Keio,” one man said, pushing Hyde’s stretcher into the ambulance and closing the door.
Sirens blared and the pungent smell of gasoline, rubber, exhaust and blood filled the air.
“Shiawase…ni…nare?” Tetsu repeated as he stared dumbly at the road, watching the ambulances disappear and the police arrive. “There is no happiness in a world without you…”

Good Morning, Mr. Hyde, Today I’m Gonna Rock Your World - Chapter 8
11:30 am the next day…
The clopping of red high heels on the linoleum hospital floor echoed through the hallway and stopped at the reception impatiently.
“My name is Oishi Megumi, I heard that my husband was here-“
“Ken,” whispered Yuki shaking the sleeping chain smoker awake from his slumber. “Hyde’s wife is here.”
“Mmpphh,” Ken opened one eye and stretched as he yawned loudly. “Megumi…”
Ken turned his head to the left slowly and looked at the window. Then he turned his head slightly to the right and looked at the clock.
“Did you just get here?”
“KEN!” she said, walking over to the sleepy duo.
“It’s nearly noon, did you just get here?”
“Yes.”
“What the hell were you doing?”
“I had a busy morning-“
“We tried calling you last night…”
“I unplugged all the phones,” she replied as if her response completely explained the erratic behavior.
“Why?” asked Ken scratching the side of his chin.
“It was irritating that someone kept calling-“
“Yeah, us. Didn’t it occur to you that it might be important which was why we were calling?”
“I don’t know,” she said snippily. “I had a busy morning the next day and I thought it was Hideto calling to say he forgot his key or something.”
“So you unplugged your phones?” asked Ken in bewilderment. “Anyway….why didn’t you come until now? What were you doing?”
“I told you I had a busy morning!”
“Your husband was in an accident! What could have been more important than that?!”
“I woke up, I had to pick up my mother, shuttle around Rei, get my nails done and my hair permed-“
“And that all couldn’t wait?”
“I only looked at my phone when I was done with my pedicure….”
“Weren’t you the least bit concerned that it might have been serious?”
“Why, didn’t he just break his leg or something, I swear I don’t know why he can’t just take care of these kinds of things on his own and-“
“Megumi, he was hit by a car,” Ken said carefully, watching her expression.
“Hit by a car?” she repeated slowly.
“Yeah, Hyde is in a coma,” Ken said looking at Yuki who affirmed the fact by nodding his head.
“Where…is he?”
“He’s in there…” pointed Ken, down the stark hall.
“Oh my god…Is he gonna…?”
“Well, it doesn’t look good for Hyde. They said the physical damage was significant, but they managed to stabilize that. The broken bones will mend and heal, but what they’re more concerned with is the damage to his eyes and brain.”
“His eyes and brain?”
“I dunno the details on it, but they said something about damage to his eyes and possible trauma to the brain.”
“So…”
“The head surgeon said that there were pretty much three cases. One, he may never wake up and will be comatose for the rest of his life. Two, he may wake up with severe brain damage and he will not be the same person he was before the accident-meaning he will be handicapped. Or three, he may wake up and have suffered no damage.”
“What are the odds?”
“80 percent on the first one, 19 percent on the second one, and less than 1 percent on the last one-“
“You mean…”
“He’s stable and will probably be okay on life support for years if necessary, but he will most likely be a vegetable.”
“Is he heavily disfigured?”
“I think they could fix it with plastic surgery…”
“So, let me get this straight…he might not wake up for the rest of his life or if he does wake up, he’s probably going to be blind, mentally retarded, disfigured, and going to require around the clock monitoring and assistance?! Am I just supposed to sit around and wait for him the rest of his life?!”
“‘For rich of for poor, in sickness and in health’…”
“And when does it become too much? Does he expect me to keep him on life support until his money runs out?!”
“Oh, don’t worry. He’s got a lawyer-“
“He has a lawyer for this kind of stuff?”
“His lawyer called and then stopped by to bring the documentation…”
“What documentation?”
“The documentation that states that Tetsu has power of attorney or something like that and he’s authorized to make all decisions regarding Hyde’s health-“
“But I’m his wife-“
“I think the papers said something about the only person being legally authorized was Tetsu.”
“What’s his name?”
“Who?”
“The lawyer!”
“Fujitani Akira. It’s a woman.”
“A WOMAN?!”
“Yeah, she talked to Tetsu about-“
“Speaking of the devil, where is he?”
“Who, Tetsu? Oh, I think he was talking to the doctors and then I think he went to Hyde’s room. Did you wanna talk to him?”
Megumi looked at her watch.
“Um, no…Rei. He’s waiting in the car with his grandmother. I better take them home. I’ll…I’ll just come back and talk to Tetsu when I come back this evening…”
“Okay.”

“TETSU! WHERE IS HE?!” shouted Megumi as she burst through the doorway later that afternoon as the sun was sinking on the horizon.
Tetsu was sitting on a chair facing the window and did not move.
“Hyde’s right there in the bed,” he said quietly, as a cool breeze wafted through the room.
“Not Hideto, the man who hit my husband!” she said, stomping into the room, slamming the door behind her.
“They pronounced him dead when they reached the hospital,” Tetsu said, staring ahead at nothing. “He crashed through the windshield and they couldn’t save him.”
“What?! Well, did you get his information?! You were there right? I’ll sue that bastard’s family for-”
“Tochigi Gou. 42 years old. Unemployed. Living alone. No known relatives. Current debt to mafia loan sharks, 50 million yen. Even if he were a billionaire and you won the entire fortune in damages for reckless homicide, all the money in the world cannot bring the dead back to life, much less restore the consciousness of a man who has been rendered comatose....”
Tetsu stood up and stared down at the city below as he scratched against the windowpane absently.
“He won at the slot machines this morning. According to the receipts in his wallet found his back pants pocket, he bought himself a fancy car and hung out at the Turkish baths until about 9pm. He was drunk and ran a red light. When he turned, he lost control of his car and it hit a street lamp and two parked cars in front of a convenience store where Hyde was standing. He was just there at the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Tetsu turned around and looked at Megumi, who gasped when she saw Tetsu’s face covered with what looked to be dirt and smoke smudges. The front of his clothes were covered in dried bloodstains and there was rubble stuck to his sleeves.
“Did…you go home yet?” she asked, covering her mouth in shock and horror.
“No,” Tetsu said wearily, touching Hyde’s bandage covered hand and staring at the bandage mummified Hyde connected to a bunch of monitors and wires lying in the hospital bed. “I came straight here after I finished the police report. They’ve done all they can to stabilize him, but he’s in a coma… How ironic that he should meet a similar fate to his parents…”
"His parents? Similar fate? I thought he just didn't get along with them?”
“I guess he didn't tell you, huh?" Tetsu said straightening the wrinkles in the sheets. "Hyde’s parents died in an automobile accident…well, before you two were married. But still...They were the victims of a DUI accident too. It’s not that his relationship with his family is strained; he has no living family. He’s the only child, no cousins…”
“Were they...did they....were they comatose too?"
"No. They were good people...They died instantaneously."
"What does being 'good people' have anything to do with it?"
"They didn't suffer. That's what Hyde said. They were driving up a winding road and a cargo truck that was driving on the wrong side of the road just plowed into them at 150 kph. They didn't have a chance. But Hyde said that when he got to the scene of the accident, from the tire tracks and damage, they probably didn't see the truck coming around the corner. It was tragic, but Hyde said he was glad that they did not suffer...But in Hyde's case, he's just comatose..."
"Comatose....I heard Hideto's lawyer came down."
"She did. How did you know?"
"Ken told me."
"Are they still there?"
"Yes. They were in the lobby when I came at noon, but I saw them smoking outside on the second floor when I came back."
"..."
"I heard that you have power of attorney."
"Durable," Tetsu said solemnly tracing up and down the striped hospital sheets. "Power of attorney, that is...For over ten years, though I've never had to exercise it."
"What are his wishes?"
"Officially or unofficially?"
"Does it matter?"
"Do you care? Because if you don't care--"
"I know, it doesn't matter," Megumi glared at Tetsu, who appeared not to notice.
"Well, officially, he's given me complete authority to act on his behalf in his best interests as deemed fit by my judgment. Unofficially, he has addressed the 'life-sustaining procedures' more specifically in terms of time frame and whatnot."
"Which are...?"
"Are what?"
"What are the unofficial ones, particularly the time frame?"
"He has asked me not to disclose that to you."
"What, are we talking 3 months, 6 months, years...until all financial resources have been exhausted?"
"I have taken an oath not to disclose that information to you, I'm sorry," Tetsu rubbed his eye and sighed.
"What am I supposed to do then?!" demanded Megumi. "My husband is comatose with very little chance of recovery, he may be blind or mentally incompetent should he wake up, we have bills to pay--"
"Just live modestly in the meantime. I'm sure that he has enough to cover utilities and food for at least several years--"
"What about the house? Hideto for some reason took out a mortgage on it--"
"He gets a tax benefit doing it this way. I'll take care of the payments for now. Don't worry about it."
"Well, you know as his wife--"
"As his wife," Tetsu cut in irritably, his cold stare piercing through her. "Go home and take care of your number one priority, Rei. Stop being so self-centered and reevaluate your priorities. There's nothing more for you to do here. Go home to Rei, Megumi. He needs you now more than ever…Good night.”
Tetsu put his head down on the bed next to Hyde’s leg and closed his eyes like an old dog sleeping at the foot of the bed.
Megumi stood in the middle of the room speechless, stunned at Tetsu's reaction. She felt like he had slapped her in the face like a parent would to their six year old spoiled brat whining in the toy store. And the fact that it was all true just made it all sting that much more.
