So ok, here are my thoughts about my genderless erotica SMP idea.
First, genderless erotica is definitely a jumping point, this is not what my actual project will end up being. This will probably be more like "Kt's Treaty on Love and Sex" while focusing on specific aspects of both love and sex--mostly on gender because gender is something that interests me and will provide a good common theme through the work.
I want to write a bunch of creative writing pieces that can explore gender within sex and love. Each of the pieces will be something that can stand alone, but also work together as a whole to provide a larger picture. They're also going to be stylistically vastly different from one another, purposefully. This is to kind of represent how there are so many different ways people view themselves and how gender is not this dichotomy but rather a sea of possibilities.
Here are my ideas for the individual pieces so far:
-Small pieces that come between larger pieces/sections. They will be labeled "Man," "Woman," "Woman Man," "Man Woman," etc. and have some kind of description of sex from their viewpoint. Other than the label there won't be any gendered language. Which will be tricky.
-Inanimate objects having sex/talking about love.
-A Tender Buttonsesque poem thing.
Obviously there are going to have to be explanations of my concept of not only sex and love, but also of gender. I think that there is going to have to be some kind of introduction to describe my concept of gender and what exactly I'm trying to emphasis with these pieces.
Another thing I'm going to have to do is read. I have to become familiar with how other people have tackled this concept and what other people think about gender. Here is my reading list so far:
-Octavia Butler
-Jeanette Winterson
-Anais Nin
-Kate Borestein
-Pomo Sexuals
I've talked to Angela Johnson and Sarah S. (who is going to send me an email with other suggestions and help me find books in the Womyn's Center) so far, and plan on getting recommendations of things to read from JCB. I've never actually talked to her before, so that should be exciting. She is very intimidating--but less so after listening to her read her Mama Ph.D. essay.
Considering I'll have all next year to prepare and the year after to actually do it, I think I don't really need to start thinking about this now. But after that thoughtless idea... I can't stop thinking about it and getting excited. I can't wait to sit down and start writing. I need more ideas, though. The pieces I have sketched out above won't get me very far and aren't... I dunno, exciting. They could be very interesting, if I execute them well, but they just aren't... they're missing something. But then again, there will be like two years worth of work going into this so they will turn out fine.
Fuck I'm excited :D
