Wally didn't know when he had started to think of Bruce as Bruce. Even when the man had pulled both of their masks off during the Thanagarian invasion, he had stayed Batman. A hero beyond heroes-immovable and incorruptible. Sure, he joked around with the guy, tried to get him to loosen up, but he also like to talk to his city from time to time on patrol. He didn't expect either to answer back.
Steadily though, he started to catch little pieces of Bruce as they crossed each other's paths in the Watchtower. Wally woke up in the med bay once, and there was Batman, passed out and slumped low in the chair beside him. Another day he overheard the Dark Knight telling Green Arrow--oh so casually--that he preferred the Stones to the Beatles. When he spotted Batman filling in a crossword puzzle while on monitor duty, it had become a game.
Fun Fact That Most People Don't Know About The Flash (But The Batman Probably Does Because He Knows Everything) #4: Wally was good at remembering observations of data when he deemed it 'Serious'-you didn't stay a lab assistant if you couldn't. And learning what Bruce liked or disliked was definitely 'Serious.' After careful study, he determined first that Batman was right handed though he would use his left with equal ease if he needed-Wally had watched him write out notes to two different leaguers at the same time like that.
Three weeks later, he had learned that Bruce only ate chicken or fish with lots of veggies in the cafeteria-actually, he had a hypothesis that Bruce preferred asparagus over broccoli but had to wait for the two to be served together again to confirm it; however, every Friday, Bruce grabbed a bowl of cookies and cream ice cream.
Wally wasn't entirely surprised, when one afternoon, Bruce slipped into the elevator with him and crossed his arms, "You've been following me."
"Yep," he agreed easily.
"Why?"
He shrugged and grinned, "It's fun? And I was curious."
"Curious? About what?"
"Bruce."
"Playing detective, are we?" Oo, no one could sound derisive like the Batman could!
"Yep!" The door pinged open for his floor and Wally stepped around Bruce easily, holding up a finger, "Oh, hey, next time Supes asks you to go to that burger place in Metropolis, you totally should-they have the best cookies and cream shake!"
Then he was gone in a flash, leaving a vaguely bewildered Batman behind him.
