“Wait…hold on… WHAT?” Jasper sat on his couch across from his mother, his jaw agape. On either side of him were his step-cousin and their best friend. On his mother’s were his father and his best friend’s father.
“Sweetie, I know this is sudden.” His mothers accent coming on a little more strongly then normal. “But we truly do love each other.”
“NO. Just… no! You... You can’t marry him!” Jasper choked, standing up, his hands flailing as his brain whirled with the revelation that had been bestowed upon him.
Mr. Winnock had been stationed as a military consultant in the French embassy over the summer between his daughter’s sophomore and junior year of high school. It was then that he had reconnected with the mother of his daughter’s old friend. They hadn’t expected their whirlwind romance to go further then it had.
“Jasper, your mother has the right to-“
“It’s not about THAT.” Jasper said, exasperated, having listened to his parent’s ‘we’re divorced but we’re comfortable around each other’ spiel earlier.
The adults exchanged a look with one another. They tried to reassure him that they weren’t trying to force him into a new home situation. They reiterated how they loved him but needed to do something for themselves. Jasper pinched the bridge of his nose.
“No nono, guys! Look, Mr. Winnock, you’re a cool guy and all.” He said, his voice pleading. “But you CAN’T marry my mother!”
“Why not?” He finally asked, his no-nonsense temperament finally having enough with the beating around the bush.
“Y-…You’re Maggie’s DAD.” He finally spit out, gesturing back at her. The brainy teenager sunk into the cushions more, having stayed quiet. She had, apparently, known about her father’s over-sea romance for a while. She just hadn’t made the connection. And she was used to playing by her father’s word. Henry coughed uncomfortably from the other side of her.
“I thought you liked Maggie.” His mother frowned, the connection completely missing her.
“THAT’S exactly my point!” Jasper’s face could not look more strained. A look of recognition dawned over all their faces. Maggie was not one to blush, though a slight pink dusted her cheeks.
“My love life is screwed up enough as it is!” He sputtered. “I mean, wasn’t it bad enough that I’ve somehow got myself caught in this bizarre and totally NOT me threesome thing as it is, but you want to make one of them my step-sister. God! Wasn’t my step-cousin enough for you?”
“Jasper!” Maggie hissed through her teeth. Henry placed his forehead in one hand. Jasper froze, a look of horror coming over him as he noticed the adults staring at him.
“…Tell me I did not just say all of that out loud.” He pleaded, his eyes closing as his voice squeaked.
“…Wait, hold on…. THREESOME?” Mr. Winnock growled defensively.
“Daddy, it’s not LIKE that.” Maggie stood up quickly. “We’re not… like THAT… we just…uh…”
“While polygamy isn’t recognized in many places anymore, polyamory itself isn’t necessarily about physical relation, but building a relationship based on creating a balanced and fulfilled life together.” Henry piped up, though somewhat quietly. “Though for the people of-“
Jasper warned with a side-glance. Henry stopped watching the red flex in and out of Mr. Winnock’s face. He swallowed, sticking put on his spot on the couch. Bryan looked over the teenagers, avoiding the glare from his ex-wife that said more than words: what exactly have you let my son get up to.
“So…you…” He pointed at his son. “And…Henry…and Maggie?” the names looked difficult to say.
“Not anymore they’re not!” Mr. Winnock stood up madly. Jasper’s mother started to follow him. “Maggie we’re going-“
“No.” Maggie stood her ground. Her father spun around, obviously shocked by her answer. She walked over to him and took his hand.
“Daddy. When have I EVER done things the ‘right’ way?” He stood silently. “You always told me never to sell myself short, to stand up for my country, myself, and my heart. When I started middle school you told me not to let anyone take advantage of me, my brain or my body. And you’re always telling me how ‘determined’ boys my age can be.”
“Exactly! Doesn’t this prove-“ He started.
“ This proves that I’m not selling myself short. Jasper, Henry, sure they’re crazy and typical teenage boys. But...” She turned around to face them, smiling. “But they also respect me. They treat me like a human first, and a girl second. At least to my face.” She prodded them lightly.
She let go of her father’s hand and took a couple steps back. Henry grinned, slipping off of the couch and standing to take her empty palm into his. She smiled and grabbed the dumbstruck teen to her other side to pull him in.
“Mr. Winnock…you came here to get your daughter’s blessing on a huge step in your life. You’ve found someone else you think you could spend your life with -and congratulations.” Henry spoke up. “But she couldn’t have been much more comfortable with this then Jasper was.”
“Well then why didn’t she-“ Jasper tried to cut in.
“But she wants you to be happy.” Henry ignored him for the moment. “So…why not try to let her be happy to? I mean it’s not like you don’t have a few good sets of eyes on us. How many parents can say they have that advantage?”
“We’re not asking you to understand this.” Maggie tagged on. “We’re asking you to trust us.” Her father shifted his weight and crossed his arms. Jasper’s mother’s eyes soften as she watched her son’s distress as his partners stood up to work out the situation he had gotten them into.
“Well.” Mr. Bartlett stood up from his seat and went to place a hand on Maggie’s shoulder. “I always knew you’d make a great addition to the debate team.”
“Bryan!” his ex-wife exclaimed.
“Colette…” He turned to her. “She has a point. Nothing about these kids is normal. If you’d been here the past year… you’d probably see it.” He neglected to mention that the shift was most likely due to Henry himself. “And you’d also know that whatever we say… they’re probably not going to listen.” The teenagers exchanged a look of victory. “And, personally, I’d rather know what’s going on before the crisis happens.”
“HOWEVER.” He turned a sharp eye on them. “That doesn’t mean there won’t be rules established. And if I’m going to agree to this…you’re going to have to meet us more then half way on this issue.” What could the guy say? He worked with teenagers, and in conjunction adults, for a living. He was used to building bridges when needed.
“That’s assuming that Mr. Winnock, Colette, AND Mr. and Mrs. Griffon agree as well.” He turned to the fellow parents. Henry shrugged. He was pretty sure this would be on the bottom of his parent’s worry list where he was concerned.
Colette’s shoulders sank in defeat. She went over and placed a hand on her fiancée’s shoulder. Her looked at her, then at his daughter who was still standing her ground.
“Do they really make you happy?” He asked. She nodded, reassuring him. “Then…” he drew out the suspense as he sized up the teenage boys. “You better make sure you don’t break my little girl’s heart. Because I’m here to stay, and I assure you I know 103 ways to make your daily life hell.” He threatened. Maggie grinned and rushed to hug her father as the boys chanted ‘yes sir.’
“So. I guess...this means we’re having a wedding.” Maggie said, attempting to lighten up the mood as she offered Collette her superior organizational services. The older woman accepted them greatly. As the girls chattered, Mr. Bartlett and Mr. Winnock hovered over the boys like vultures.
“Jasper. Henry.” Bryan started.
“About those rules…” Mr. Winnock finished.
The boys gulped.
