Hi everyone,
Classes started last week. They're pretty tough, but I like it because it takes up more of the time. I'm off to Belgium on Friday to spend the weekend in Brussels and eat a ton of waffles and chocolate. I went to Paris a few Saturdays ago and saw the Eiffel Tower (lit up at night) and went to mass at Notre Dame. I left my USB cord at home, but if I can find a replacement I'll start posting pictures. I also came down with a nasty something-or-other a few days ago, but I've been sleeping roughly 12 hours per night to kick it so I'm in good shape for the weekend. It seems to be working; I'm feeling much better than I have been.
As far as the adjustment is concerned, I still miss everyone a lot but it's getting easier. I've been here for almost a month, which means I'm 1/4 of the way through with my stay. I just got a package from my mom with a huge bag of Reese's peanut butter cups, so I'm a happy camper. They don't sell peanut butter in France; it doesn't exist here. Actually, here's a list of some of the weirdness I've encountered so far in France:
1) The entire country shuts down on Sundays, even doctor's offices. That proved to be an obstacle for me this past Sunday when I was sick. But also, it's just strange because I'm not used to having a whole day to sit around and do nothing. I'll get used to it, though. I'll use it to catch up on sleep and do homework.
2) France is 5 years behind technologically. No one uses or needs the Internet, and it's been driving me crazy. Luckily now I have free wireless in the library, and I was sneaky and may be able to hook up dial-up in my room. Yay.
3) Related to #1, everything is closed every day from 12-2. I've learned to pencil grocery shopping into my schedule.
4) French people have interesting senses of humor. And French boys have no shame. NONE. It can make for uncomfortable situations, but makes me really appreciate my boyfriend.
5) People carry baguettes around absolutely everywhere; it's not a myth. And every fashionable woman has a little tiny dog.
6) I'm convinced that these dogs are half-human; we have to be cautious around them, because they are fearless. And they want our food.
By the way, I had no idea that I no longer receive Livejournal notifications in my e-mail; instead, it's in the little LJ message center. So, sorry I haven't been responding to comments; I didn't know I'd gotten any.
I miss you all very much. How's everything going for you guys? School/work/etc.? I'm curious, so let me know.
