Writer's Block: Summer Break, How did you spend summers when you were a kid?

Jul 06, 2007 10:44

I spend most of my summers in my mothers small dusty town of Humboldt, TN. Sipping on peach Ne-hi, collecting cans to turn into penny cookies at the local penny candy store. The steamy sweet smell of corn dogs rolling alongside the hot sausages and hot dogs at the local gas station roadside 'cafe'. Summer memories for me are filled with the smells of all the food that was banned to me in Boston and all the colors in the rainbow. Red jelly shoes that were my first 'cool' piece of clothing. Orange jelly beans that stained my palms. The hot stifling yellow jelly jacket that was NOT a great fashion idea (not for kids running around in the summer sun it wasn't. The fun of rolling down whatever itchy green hills me and my cousins could find. The icy cold blue of the Slurpee's that stained our tongues for the rest of the day. Purple was that elusive flower that grew among the green grass within the rolling hills. These are not well written but they are well remembered moments of my childhood summers.
