Masaki was struggling to carry two paper bags of groceries when Imai passed him by. Imai greeted Masaki with a smirk and a nod, making Masaki shiver slightly as he entered the elevator. When the elevator doors opened to reveal the fifth floor corridor, Masaki stepped out, hauling the bags higher. An apple rolled out of the bag making Masaki curse softly. He was about to put the bags down and go pick up the fallen apple when he heard a familiar voice say, “I’ve got this. You need a hand with those bags?”
Masaki’s smile was genuine at seeing Sho hold the apple, “Yes please. I shouldn’t have bought that many. I should have just gotten enough for a day or two, but I saw so many fresh vegetables that I kind of went on a vegetable shopping spree.”
“Looks like you’ve enough groceries in here to last a week,” Sho smiled taking one of the bags.
Upon reaching Masaki’s apartment, Masaki turned to face Sho, “Thanks for helping me carry the vegetables. Umm… if you don’t have any plans, you can join me for dinner tonight. I am making fried rice and I’m told that I make a very delicious fried rice.”
“That would be nice. I was just going to head to the deli to grab a sandwich, but home cooked fried rice sounds much more appealing than a cold sandwich,” Sho replied with a grin as Masaki unlocked the door. Neither man was prepared for what greeted them next. There was a distinct sound of dripping water coming from inside. Once inside, their firm footsteps made horrible squishy noises. Both of them stared in horror at the water collected on the floor of Masaki’s apartment.
“What happened?” Masaki gasped in horror at seeing that his apartment was flooded.
“I’m not sure, but that might be the source,” Sho pointed to the ceiling in the living room where a large patch looked wet and they could clearly see water dripping down from the spot.
“What am I going to do? Jun isn’t here, I am not officially on the lease, and so I can’t call the landlord to fix this. Oh god, this is a nightmare!” Masaki cringed and muttered at the same time.
Sho took the bag of groceries from Masaki’s hand and nodded towards the bedroom, “Why don’t you grab your clothes and come back to my place? We’ll call the landlord and sort this out together.”
Masaki turned to stare at Sho, “What am I going to tell the landlord when they ask who I am?”
“Tell them you are house-sitting for Jun and you discovered the place like this when you returned from work. I’m sure they can take care of this. Go get those clothes before the water gets any deeper,” Sho replied, “I’ll put these groceries in my apartment and come back if you need any help carrying anything.”
“Thank you,” Masaki sighed and running his fingers through his hair, he headed to the bedroom.
Sho’s smirk was slow to spread across his face and Masaki had no knowledge of the sparkle in Sho’s eyes. Sho quickly went to his apartment to dump the groceries on the kitchen counter and headed back to Masaki’s place, “Aiba-san, do you need help carrying anything?”
Masaki carried a heavy suitcase out of the bedroom and carefully waded through ankle length water, “Ah, yes. I’ve some books in the room and I don’t want them to be damaged. Some of them are quite rare, so be careful … don’t drop any of them.” As Sho nodded and headed to the bedroom, Masaki walked out of the apartment and set the suitcase outside Sho’s apartment door.
Sho took a deep breath as he entered the bedroom, groaning at the scent of Masaki’s faint cologne permeating the room. He inspected the room carefully, imagining how his Masaki must have undressed in front of the closet or how he must have rolled around in bed. He could imagine Masaki’s body bucking in passion at an erotic dream he might have had at night. The images evoked a small moan and all his blood immediately rushed south, making his jeans fit very snug in a second.
When he heard the front door open, Sho reluctantly went to the bookshelf and started grabbing the books. “Which ones are important? We should probably take the important books out first and then come back for the rest later,” Sho commented when he heard Masaki’s footsteps behind him.
“Ah, you’re right. These are first editions. Quite valuable. Some of these are now worth quite a lot of money,” Masaki mumbled pulling a couple of leather bound volumes, “Here, take these first. The rest aren’t valuable in money, but some of these have sentimental value to me.”
Nodding his head, Sho walked out, “I’ll be back.”
Grabbing the books he deemed were worth saving, Masaki followed Sho out with an empty hamper full of books, “I think this is it. I think we can leave the rest in there while the landlord sends men to fix this leak.”
“Very well then,” Sho held the door open, “Come on in. Make yourself at home while I call the management.”
Smiling gratefully, Masaki entered Sho’s place and placed the hamper down. While Sho placed the call, Masaki went out to grab his suitcase.
“Imai speaking,” a voice answered Sho’s call, “Sho, did everything go as planned?”
Sho glanced at his front door and smiled, “Yeah. Everything is going as planned. He just stepped out to get his suitcase. Make sure that place is not accessible for a very long time.” When he saw Masaki drag his suitcase inside, he motioned to the phone, “Ah, manager-san, I’m calling from the Sakura apartments, there seems to be a leak on the 6th floor apartment. There is water everywhere in my neighbor’s place and we saw the water dripping down the ceiling. Here, you can speak with him directly.”
Masaki blinked at the extended phone and taking a deep breath, he smiled before speaking, “Hello? My name is Aiba Masaki. My friend Matsumoto Jun rents an apartment on the 5th floor here. Jun had to go out of the country for a few weeks and I’m housesitting for her. When I returned from work I discovered that the floor was flooded and there was water dripping from the ceiling. There is already ankle deep water and the leak has not stopped yet.”
“I’ll send someone to come take a look. We’re sorry about the inconvenience this has caused. We’ll send a formal letter of apology to Matsumoto-san directly explaining that this was an unforeseen accident,” Imai replied.
“Thank you. I hope you send someone to take a look at the leak quickly,” Masaki bowed and closed the phone. “Here,” he returned the phone and looked lost, “I was told there will be someone to check out the situation …”
“Something bothering you Aiba-chan?” Sho prodded, knowing exactly how long the repair work will take.
Masaki shook his head, “It’s just that … I am not sure where to go for the few days that the plumber and the cleanup crew will be in the apartment. I am an ordinary schoolteacher; I don’t get paid a lot; I can’t afford to spend money on a hotel.”
Shaking his head, Sho casually wrapped his arm around Masaki’s shoulder in a comforting gesture, “What are friends for? You can stay here for however long it takes for them to fix your place up.”
“Really?” Masaki’s face lit up for a second before he shook his head, “I would be inconveniencing you. I’m sure your girlfriend wouldn’t like that.”
Laughing softly, Sho tightened his grip on Masaki’s shoulder briefly before letting go, “No worries. I am single and live alone. No one will mind. You can stay with me and I won’t take no for an answer.”
“Well, if you insist,” Masaki mumbled looking around, “But, isn’t this a one bedroom apartment?”
“It is, but I don’t mind sharing the room. I’ve a very large bed, so we should be comfortable,” Sho nodded towards the bedroom door.
“Ah, no. I couldn’t. I’ll be fine on the couch,” Masaki replied, plopping down on the said sofa.
Sho resisted the urge to carry Masaki into the bedroom, but refrained from acting on his impulses, knowing he’d have plenty of time to woo Masaki now, “If you say so. There is an extra closet over there and its empty. You can use that for your clothes if you need,” Sho said pointing to the closed closet doors, “If you don’t mind me asking, what are you going to do with all those groceries?”
“Right! I was going to cook fried rice. I am very good at making fried rice. As a token of my appreciation for accommodating me, let me serve you dinner!” Masaki jumped up and headed to the kitchen feeling as if he had said those words before. Shaking off the feeling, Masaki went about preparing the fried rice in Sho’s kitchen, while Sho sat at the dining table watching the love of his life make him a delicious home cooked meal.

Masaki anxiously waited the next day for the plumber to arrive. When the man finally arrived, Masaki opened the door and let him in, “Here, take a look … oh god, the water level has increased! I’m sure the people below are now flooded as well!”
The man scratched his head and looked at the ceiling, “Nothing I can do here. I need to go up to find the source of the leak. I’ll let the manager know what I come up with.”
Before Masaki could say a word, the man scratched his stomach and walked out of the apartment. Sighing softly, Masaki locked the apartment again and went back to Sho’s place with a pout. Sho looked up from the newspaper he was reading, “What happened?”
Slumping into the couch, Masaki mumbled, “The plumber couldn’t do anything about my apartment. He had to go upstairs to find the source. He said he’ll let the manager know when he finds something.”
“Well then. Nothing to worry now, I’m sure the manager will clean up this mess for you,” Sho quipped, “Why don’t I take you out to dinner? To cheer you up? I know a very good yakiniku place close by.” At Masaki’s hesitant look, Sho continued, “My treat … to welcome my new roommate.”
“Temporary roommate,” Masaki corrected Sho and a slow smile blossomed on his face, “Very well then. Your treat today; When this is all cleaned up, I’ll treat you to a delicious meal wherever you want … as my thank you for letting me stay.”

Days turned to weeks and there was no word from the manager. All his attempts to contact the guy turned out to be useless. His voicemails went unanswered. He had adjusted quite well to living with Sho. They seemed to be so compatible. Sho seemed to always be home when Masaki returned from school - no matter the time of day. When inquired about work, Sho informed Masaki that since he was in the upper management in one of the well-known banks, he could make his own hours. Masaki had taken his word at face value and didn’t question further.
They had settled into a routine and a feeling of comfortable domesticity had settled over them. Sho would buy groceries on his way home from work and Masaki would cook dinner for them both.
“I’m home,” Masaki yelled closing the door behind him expecting to see Sho on the couch. Frowning at the absent Sho, Masaki set his books down and knocked on the bathroom door, “Sho-chan?” When there was no answer, Masaki checked the bedroom, only to find it empty. Wondering where Sho might have gone, Masaki went to the bathroom to clean up.
Sho was entering the foyer when Masaki walked out of the bathroom wiping his face with a towel. Tossing the towel into the hamper, Masaki smiled at Sho, “You’re late today.”
“I was held up at work. There were a few things that needed to be addressed immediately and a meeting to attend,” Sho grinned and held a case of red wine.
Raising his eyebrows in surprise, Masaki went to take the bag of groceries from Sho’s hand, "Are we celebrating something?”
Sho followed Masaki into the kitchen and set the wine in the fridge, “Yes. We had our semi annual financial reports released and it turns out I’m doing very good.”
“You are? So does this mean you’ll be promoted soon?” Masaki was excited for Sho.
Sho walked into the bathroom to clean up and came back to find Masaki chopping vegetables, “Well, there is one other person who is competing against me. His reports weren’t too bad, but as of today I’m in the lead. I just have to hold on to this lead for one more quarter and I’ll be the head of Tokyo branch.”
“That sounds awesome. No wonder you are excited. We’re totally celebrating today,” Masaki declared.
The food came first and wine accompanied the food. One glass turned to two and then three. They cleared the dishes, but the wine kept coming long after dinner was finished. In his drunken stupor, Sho turned to Masaki and placed a soft kiss on those tempting lips. Masaki went still for a second, as did Sho. But Sho recovered first and instead of pulling away, he kissed Masaki again with more passion.
After not having any intimate contact with another person, Masaki felt suddenly starved. The alcohol in him brushed away his normal inhibitions and he plunged into the kiss. Neither was aware of much else after that. Their tongues lapped at each other and their fingers clawed at the fabric of their clothing. The feel of bare skin under their fingers elicited desperate moans for more. Sho’s fingers groped in his back pocket and pulled out a packet of foil. Ripping it open he rolled the lubed condom expertly on his arousal.
Masaki’s pants were bunched around his ankles and seeing Sho ready for him, he lifted his hips, “Please.”
That one word was Sho’s undoing. Masaki’s needy voice drove Sho’s need deeper and he grabbed Masaki’s hips. Wrapping Masaki’s legs around his waist, Sho guided himself to Masaki’s entrance. With his eyes focused on Masaki’s face, Sho took Masaki hard and fast, without a pause. Their groans filled the living room and they writhed half on the couch, half on the floor.
Masaki’s fingernails left crescent marks on Sho’s right shoulder while he stroked himself to match the rhythm Sho had set. His orgasm came with little warning. His breath hitched and his eyes rolled back in his head as he came over his stomach. Sho gasped at the tightening of Masaki’s body and it became almost impossible to hold off his orgasm at bay much longer. Sho soon followed Masaki and spilled himself into the condom inside Masaki.
Exhausted, they stayed in that uncomfortable position for a few minutes before Masaki’s body pushed Sho out and Sho fell away. After a few minutes of rest, Sho pulled the condom off and threw it into the trashcan before pulling Masaki to his feet. They walked into Sho’s bedroom, still feeling the effects of the wine they had consumed as they fell asleep in each other’s arms.
The next morning Masaki woke with a hangover and his body ached all over. He hissed in pain as he tried to move and he felt aches in places that weren’t supposed to ache. When he realized he was not on the couch but inside Sho’s bedroom, dread settled into the pit of his stomach. He slowly turned to his left to see Sho snuggled into the blankets, one arm thrown carelessly around Masaki’s waist. Seeing both their bodies naked, Masaki darted to the bathroom to scrub himself clean trying to go over the night’s events carefully. He went to work early without any breakfast, not having the courage to face Sho just yet.
That evening, Masaki came home wanting to know Sho’s account of the night. As far as Masaki could remember, they got too drunk and they had kissed. He couldn’t remember anything after that. Uneasy of the blankness, Masaki wanted Sho to fill him in and came home early. He had however not expected to see Imai sitting in his living room - Sho’s living room - he corrected himself, and having a normal conversation.
Upon seeing Masaki, Sho licked his lips, “You are early.”
Sensing the uneasiness between the two men, Imai cleared his throat at the silence and stood up, “I’ll see you another time Sho. Take care.”
Masaki walked inside and pointed to the closing door, “Do you know him? He is a dangerous man!”
Taking a deep breath, Sho replied, “Masaki, there is something I need to tell you. Why don’t you take a seat?”
