Blacky had a feeling people would come knocking sooner or later. It seemed to be the trendy thing to do after she'd been gone for a while, particularly when she still wanted to be left alone. She wasn't expecting Erika of all people to be the one knocking.
She raised her eyebrows in mild surprise and leaned on the door frame. "...Hello."
Ah, she was currently in. That was good. "Hello," Erika greeted in turn, bowing her head slightly. It had occurred to her that she didn't exactly have any conversation topics or anything of the sort. Well. That was just fine.
"Mm... You've been away for quite a while," she said softly, stating the obvious. The flowers in her hands were held out towards the Umbreon in a... it was not so much wary as it was tentative. The gesture was very out of the blue after all. Erika offered her a pleasant smile regardless.
"...I was in Kanto for a while." Last time Blacky was given flowers, she needed to put them over Golduck's grave. The memory was still so fresh in her mind that she was reluctant to accept the bouquet from Erika, but in the end she gently took them from the gym leader and held them close to her face.
"I don't often get these from other women." Was that an attempt at a smile?
As with many things, there was a story behind Blacky's words, and it was one Erika knew she would not be hearing. Erika could hear it in her voice and the gingerness in her actions that just seemed a little off from what Erika usually associated her with. But she didn't know her very well at all. Perhaps she was imagining it.
A new vase to fill! That was exciting! ...To her at least. "Ahh, that's good. I admit I wasn't sure if you'd like yellow. It's a little bold for some."
"It's getting so dreary outside, a cheery colour like yellow is more than welcome. Besides, it matches my markings." She grinned and held the flowers close to one of her shoulders for a second.
"Unless it has more to do with the colour's symbolism? I'm afraid I don't have all that memorized."
Erika chuckled a little. Admittedly Blacky's markings had been part of the reason she had hoped she liked the color.
"I believe many have subconsciously associated it with its more negative connotations... Cowardice and warnings... It is easy to misinterpret."
Erika reached out and gently indicated the rose amongst the smaller blossoms. "Depending on its use, this one in particular could mean infidelity or jealousy, but it has many more positive meanings than just those."
Cowardice. Infidelity. Jealousy. Those were all traits Blacky had in no short supply. Her expression darkened a little as she examined the flowers more closely.
Erika quickly realized that her words could have been taken badly just as easily as the flowers could have.
"Joy, gladness, friendship... The yellow rose can also be used to welcome someone back." Did you see what she did there. Erika pointed out the small lilies. "It can also be used to convey feelings of hope. It's a popular color in the spring, as it celebrates new life as well."
Oh goodness. An offer of friendship from a gym leader! Although so soon after everything that just happened, she was still a little bitter about Kanto and all things related to it. It was where she grew up, sure, but as a consequence there were too many memories she wanted to forget. But none of that was Erika's fault. THEN AGAIN, IF SHE'D KNOWN THE ROCKETS WERE RIGHT UNDER HER OWN CITY...
"I see. It does sound very appropriate for the situation, then." She added quietly, "perhaps they'll give me hope for my new life as well. What about the white ones, then?"
Had Erika actually known the story, the entire story, she might not haven been standing there. Or perhaps she would have... but much, much earlier. What she could have done for her... Wasn't much, really.
But she would have felt horribly responsible.
The snowdrops. Erika considered them for just a moment. She had picked them solely to echo the hopeful feelings of the lilies, but there was just something that Erika couldn't quite put her finger on that made her wonder if perhaps their additional meaning held some ground as well. Maybe she was imagining that too.
"Hope," Erika repeated. "And at times consolation."
Erika's brow furrowed very slightly in mild confusion. He? The gym leader shook her head with a faint frown. "... No, I'm afraid I am not aware of the situation."

How very crazy indeed.
Erika nodded briefly. "It does..." Erika wouldn't deny that she was curious, but her place was not to ask. She offered Blacky a small smile and a quick bow. "It is just good to see you. ...If you ever feel like a cup of tea or coffee, please feel free to stop by."

Oh, there were such stories. Erika might find out one day, probably second-or-third hand if at all. One day...
"Not at all. I like them. I just bought a vase, too. These will go nicely in it."

Oh. Well. Crap. There was no backpedaling from a comment like that. How was she supposed to know?! This was a really crazy kind of coincidence!
"Ah. Never mind that, then. Family matters. It happens. At any rate, thank you very much for the flowers."
