I've returned from band camp. The damages: my right foot is swollen a bit and hurts like hammers smashing it when I put weight on it or flex it. It wasn't as bad this morning, but of course our block exercises had to include doing some backwards movements which really irritated it. Oh, and I also got a bit of a sunburn, but nothing too bad.
Our show is all music by Sting. I did some sleuthing online to hear the original pieces and I've come to find that our arrangements are definitely adaptations of them--much more intense, in depth, and more jazzy. Still, this show is going to be totally amazing once we get it moving. We've got four pieces: Shadows in the Rain, Fragile/Send Your Love, Seven Days, and I Came to My Senses. They're all so different, so it's really cool. I think I'm going to learn a lot this season. Shadows is a swing piece. Fragile is more Latin. Seven Days is in five...which is going to be interesting. I Came to My Senses is in seven, but it's not done yet--we still need the tag for it.
We got fifty-something sets of drill done, which is amazing. We put music and marching together on the first song, attempted the second...and the last two we're still working on playing. It's going to be interesting.
Our list of performances kicks off with Convocation on the Thursday that school starts. I guess the interim chancellor decided to bring this sort of traditional thing so the freshman get some sort of reverse graduation, "Um...you're here at UML. Go forth and do something." I say reverse graduation because it's been requested that we play "Pomp and Circumstance" for it. Not "Final Countdown." Hehehe...
For those in the Lowell area, MICCA finals will be in Lowell this year, so if you want to see us perform, we're going to be probably in the afternoon that day. I'll probably post once it gets close to that time. I have no idea where it will be hosted, but I doubt that it will be at UML, since our football field is far too small for an event of that size. So...come see our soon-to-be-awesome show.
The alto line is huge this year. One of the girls is an Oakmont alum, and another is from the 'burg, so I've been talking with her this week. It's been funny swapping horror stories about band. I'm such a band-o, band nerd, band geek, etc. I might actually miss it next year.
