Office Hours [Friday]

Aug 24, 2007 07:00

Dolores Umbridge arrived at her office expecting to see the remains of the bloody and burned hall she'd been in last night.

Instead, it was pristine, like nothing ever happened. She knew she hadn't done this and she was almost positive one of the students wasn't idiotic enough to come into the school after hours ( Read more... )

"Princess!" Hades greeted, appearing in Dolores' office with arms wide open.

"Excuse me?" Umbridge asked, confused. "What did you just call me?"

"Or is it High Inquisitor Princess now?"

She glared at him. "You know perfectly well what my title is, Vice Principal. I can use yours. Use mine."

"Yeah, see, here's the thing. You've never used my full title. Relationships require a little give and take and I'm really not feeling it, Dolly. Dolly," he repeated. "Or Dory. What is a good nickname for Dolores anyway?"

"You will address me as High Inquisitor Umbridge," she said succinctly.

"Yeeeeah, no, I don't think I will. But hey, let's not kid here, I know I won't. Let's go with Dolly. Anyway, I'm getting the distinct feeling here that you're insane (an admirable trait in a mortal, granted) and it's only a matter of time before you kill someone or someone kills you, I don't really care which, so I just wanted to stop by and leave a little parting advice." His expression turned solemn. "If you ever decide to give up education or psychosis," he lowered his voice to a concerned whisper. "Don't go into interior decorating. It's just not you."

"There is absolutely no insanity here," she said mildly, fixing him with a small smile. "There is an educator dealing with an unruly school and all the stress that entails and I'll thank you kindly not to question my taste again."

"You're welcome, but no." Hades moved to inspect something on the wall. "Anyway, down to business. Fall semester is coming up. Got any plans?"

"I will be selecting classes that I think the students should be learning rather than let the horrible curriculum continue further," she started. "And I will probably be making several staff changes. Starting with...higher level positions."

"I couldn't agree more. Except the part about the classes, because, well, they're fun to mock on the radio when they're stupid. Seriously, throw in classes like math and deportment and I'd really be reaching to the bottom of barrel for good material. But staff changes? Perfect. Start at the top. Wait a second," he switched topics. "Speaking of starting at the top, do your grand high poobah powers have any influence on the school board?"

"I have the full and complete support of the school board," she said demurely. "I do not need any powers over them. I meant the staff under me. Like...yourself. I'm sure you're qualified for a career elsewhere."

"Well sure, but this gig has a great dental plan. Work with me here," Hades said, brushing off her threat. He was still the God of the Dead and Lord of the Underworld and his attention span was finely honed to zoom in on whatever amused him at the time. "What would you do if the school board tried to fire you? Hypothetically speaking."

"They wouldn't even get the opportunity to try," Umbridge told him smoothly. "This is my school now."

"Now that's interesting. Care to give a little more in the way of details? And have you considered renaming it to something a little more, I don't know, peppy?"

Yeah. That would go down well.

"It's quite easy to control a person when you have the right tools at your disposal," she said cryptically. "And the name will change when I think of a more suitable name for the educational institute."
