One Mod to rule them all.

So apparently Livejournal wants the maintainers of the UMBC LJ-community to choose one of their number to become the comm's Owner. This would allow that person (and only that person) to decide who gets to be a maintainer and to make large-scale changes to the comm, such as renaming or even deleting it ( Read more... )

Since you're the only one who took initiative over this, I'm saying that you should do it. But like you said, there's not much to be done around these parts.

I'm reluctant to throw my hat into the ring on this because I'm in much the same state as Mandiferous. I graduated from UMBC almost a decade ago and found out that I was a maintainer here after receiving the Owner-vote e-mail from LJ (although I do know how the maintainer thing probably happened: my room-mate was one of the comm's original maintainers and probably added me as one at that time). I mainly posted this because I didn't want to blindly pick someone, so I thought I'd see if anyone was already doing the things that an owner and maintainer would be expected to do (and I'm not entirely sure what those are ( ... )

Maybe we should throw it out to the masses as a "someone take over because we're old or this community will die" plea. I mean, I don't mind being the owner if there is no other choice, but I also have a lot on my plate and will be a crappy owner. (Although it wouldn't really matter, since this place isn't used.) I'm hesitant to just kill it, though, because it has been an awesome place in the past. But maybe I'm just trying to hold on to my glory days.

Agreed on all counts. I actually was trying to throw it out to the community at large at the end of the post, but I realize that in context I didn't do a very good job of it.

How do you set the owner? (I look through all the community-mod options, but didn't get too far with it. All I see are moderators and such...)

For communities created after this year, the creator of the community is the owner. For all existing comms, LJ sent an e-mail to the maintainers of the community that sent them to a poll to elect one of their number to become the new owner. LJ describes all this owner nonsense here.

(Also, I can see a link to that poll under the "Administrators" tab in the userinfo. I don't know if only maintainers can use that link or if all users can.)

This is nonsense - especially since only 11 out of 15 maintainers are listed on that poll, myself not included. Not that I should care :P
