oh english class...
today we were discussing 'persepolis' which is a graphic novel by marjane satrapi about the iranian revolution. my prof was telling us about a year he spent in algiers (africa) and in this one particular very relgious town, all the women only had ONE eye showing, and they turned their face to the wall when he would walk by them in the streets. this is so that the natural beauty of women doesnt excite men... doent tempt them. this just makes me think of our culture and how a lot of people blame women for rape and abuse.
i know this is stuff that everybody knows already.
but i cried in class today. not hard. just a little bit.
same thing with FGM. women 'have' to or else they will be their culture's unmarriagable whores. what do you do with this knowledge? what can we DO?
i really like being in a class that talks about real things real issues real life.
i hope i can always find a way to incorporate 'real life' into my life. it seems like the life we lead is such farce. we are a private american hotel in the middle of haiti. an island that speaks english to cater to the tourists. this isnt the way people live.
uhhhhhh
on another note
too much to do this weekend. but for a change, fun things!
i want to:
-to go as much of the african film festival as possible (my english teacher specializes in this)
-cody's birthday party
-go to the SEJ rally on friday
-go to the VICTORY party afterward
-see 3 of the 4 movies RHA is playing this weekend
but i have to:
-go to the contemporary clarinet festival at the music school (which is 9 hours a day for 3 days. fuck!)
